Diogo Paulo (PhD 2019) is the scientific dive centre manager and dive safety officer at the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR). During his academic path, he took part in multiple scientific projects and gained immense experience in a broad scale of underwater work. He has publications in peer reviewed journals in the areas of plant ecophysiology, genetics, habitat mapping, marine census, habitat restoration and conservation. His current research focuses on habitat restoration of seagrasses, corals and algae. He is trained in the use of rebreathers, advanced decompression, deep diving using helium based breathing mixtures and cave diving. His underwater skills also include photography and video. Diogo has participated in multiple national and international scientific diving expeditions serving as a team leader and as a participant. He is a former diving instructor of several agencies (PADI, CMAS, SSI) and currently an instructor of Global Underwater Explorers (GUE), the agency which represents the highest standard in technical dive training. As a result of his vast scientific diving and teaching experience, Diogo has lead the development of the GUE Scientific Diving course. He is the GUE Instructor Trainer and Examiner for the Scientific Diver course. He also teaches Scientific Diving disciplines at the University of the Algarve as Invited Assistant Professor. Diogo acts as the Vice President of Associação Portuguesa de Mergulhadores Científicos and represents Portugal at the European Scientific Diving Panel. His responsibilities at CCMAR are to provide high quality scientific dive training, to facilitate SCUBA diving access and supervision to CCMAR visitors from the EMBRC (European Marine Biological Research Centre) and from other institutes, to provide scientific dive services and consultancy.
