Xavier Melo

Xavier Melo holds a Ph.D. in Physical Activity and Health from Faculdade de Motricidade Humana - Universidade de Lisboa (FMH-UL). Currently serving as an Associate Professor at Egas Moniz School of Health & Science, he specializes in teaching courses related to exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, and research methodology within the Physiotherapy program. His research focuses on pediatric, chronic disease, and intellectual disability populations, with a dual emphasis on 1) exploring central and peripheral cardiovascular adaptations in both acute and chronic exercise response models, and 2) investigating associations between multiple cardiovascular risk factors and surrogate markers of cardiovascular disease. Xavier Melo demonstrates substantial expertise in various domains, encompassing Vascular Imaging, Arterial Stiffness, Endothelial and Autonomic Function, Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing, Energy Expenditure, Objective Measures of Body Composition, and Physical Activity. These contributions have led to invitations to serve as a recognized and verified reviewer for several international scientific journals. His commitment extends beyond academia to the design, implementation, and assessment of community interventions aiming to promote healthy lifestyles for all. Moreover, he is dedicated to fostering social inclusion and equal opportunities in sports, promoting education through sports, with a special emphasis on socio-emotional learning. Due to his impactful contributions, Xavier holds the position of Project Manager for various national projects (PNDpT-IPDJ, CML, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, etc.) and international initiatives (ERASMUS+ SPORT), as well as the verified reviewer of KA1 and KA2 actions of the Erasmus+ program.
