Filipe Madeira graduated in Agricultural Sciences and Environment in 2008 from Escola Superior Agrária, Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco. He earned a master's degree in Integrated Pest Management in 2011 and a European PhD in Agricultural Sciences and Food Technology (Agricultural Entomology) in 2014 from the University of Lleida (Spain), where he was awarded the Best Doctoral Thesis in Agricultural Sciences (2015). During his PhD, he spent more than two months in several renowned international laboratories specializing in ecology and agroecology (Lab. Loreto Rossi - University of Sapienza, Italy; Lab. Teja Tscharntke - University of Göttingen, Germany; Lab. Zeljko Tomanovic - University of Belgrade, Serbia). There, he participated in various laboratory and field studies on insect biology and ecology, specifically investigating the movement of predatory insects between habitats and crops. His primary focus was the role of these habitats in biological control, understanding the seasonal movement of natural enemies (NE), and quantifying their function as sinks or sources in agroecosystems. From February 2015 to June 2019, he was a researcher at the University of Lleida - Agrotecnio Center (Entomology Lab.), mainly contributing to two research topics: (i) the effects of landscape composition on the abundance of pests and NE in alfalfa, maize, peach, and soybean crops; and (ii) the effectiveness of two Dicyphus species as alternative predators for biological pest control in vegetable crops. From June 2019 to June 2022, he was a researcher at the Collaborative Laboratory Mountains Research (MORE CoLab), where he developed expertise in identifying project opportunities, preparing and submitting applications, coordinating and executing projects and services, and conducting technology transfer activities for companies. From July 2022 to February 2024, he was a researcher (Institutional Scientific Employment, FCT-IPB) at the Centro de Investigação de Montanha (CIMO) and the Laboratório Associado para a Sustentabilidade e Tecnologia em Regiões de Montanha (SusTEC) at the Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, Portugal, working primarily in crop protection in oliviculture. Since February 2024, he has been an Assistant Professor at Escola Superior Agrária - Instituto Politécnico de Santarém, responsible for General Agriculture and farm machinery I, Pastures forages and arable crops, and Biodiversity conservation and management of natural resources He is also an integrated researcher at the Centro de Estudos de Recursos Naturais, Ambiente e Sociedade (CERNAS). He is the author of two book chapters and 24 scientific articles (most of them published in Q1 journals), serving as the first author in 10 articles. He has supervised several master's and undergraduate theses and mentored multiple students and research fellows during their laboratory and fieldwork. Additionally, he has contributed to the organization of several academic and professional events. He is a Topic Editor for the Horticulturae journal (MDPI), Guest Editor for two special issues (Horticulturae (ISSN 2311-7524) and Biological Control in Food Crops (ISSN: 2673-7655)), and an Associate Editor for the journal Modern Concepts and Developments in Agronomy (MCDA). Furthermore, he serves on the review panel for Insects and Entomologia Generalis and has reviewed scientific articles for several other journals. He has been a scientific project evaluator for the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT), Paraguay, and the Agência Nacional de Inovação (ANI), Portugal. He has also served as a consultant on the following projects: PTDC/ASP-PLA/29110/2017 (FCT, Portugal), AGL2017-84127-R (MICINN, Spain), and FMV-2-2016-1-126142 (ANII, Uruguay). He has participated as a speaker at several national and international conferences and participate on multiple national funded projects (Spain and Portugal), as well as three EU-funded projects.
