Andreia Sofia Barros concluded her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto in 2024, under a collaboration with Ferring Pharmaceuticals, and is currently a Junior Researcher at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), University of Porto, Portugal. Over the past years, she has focused on the development of oral and targeted nanomedicines for chronic diseases, with particular emphasis on smart nanosystems for the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Her work also includes the design and implementation of advanced 3D in vitro models that closely mimic the in vivo intestinal environment, supporting both drug screening and disease pathophysiology studies. Throughout her career, Andreia has collaborated with leading pharmaceutical companies and completed specialized training at renowned institutions. Her research interests span biomaterials, tissue engineering, nanotechnology, and targeted intestinal drug delivery, leading to multiple high-impact publications and several notable awards, including the 2024 Young Scientist Investigator Trainee Award from the Controlled Release Society (CRS). Andreia is also deeply involved within international societies as the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO) and the CRS, where she actively contributed as a Young Scientist representative and participates in peer review and conference organization.
