José V. Prata received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the New University of Lisbon in 1997 under the supervision of Prof. Sundaresan Prabhakar and Prof. Ana M. Lobo. He was a process engineer, a researcher and vice-Director of Research Department at the pharmaceutical company Hovione, SA since 1980, prior to joining the faculty at Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa/Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa in 1992, where he worked as Coordinating Professor in the fields of Organic Chemistry, Industrial Organic Chemistry, Industrial Processes, and Polymer Science and Technology, from 2000 to 2023. Since 2015, he is a researcher at Centro de Química de Vila Real (CQVR) at Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. His research has been focused on the design and synthesis of new functional calixarenes, the third generation of supramolecules, and calixarene-based luminescent polymers. The supramolecular recognition abilities of calixarene compounds, and polymers thereof, have been successfully applied in sensory chemistry aiming several analytical targets, ranging from the efficient discrimination of heme proteins (e.g., cytochrome c vs. myoglobin) and non-heme proteins (lysozyme), to highly sensitive and selective fluorescent probes either for detection of transition metal cations or recognition of fullerenes C60 and C70, besides their outstanding behaviour as solid-state probes in the detection of nitroaliphatic liquid explosives, nitroaromatic high explosives like TNT, and explosive taggants, all in vapour phase, as well as noxious aromatic nitroanilines. More recently, his research activities are also oriented towards the synthesis and characterisation of sustainable carbon dots (CDs) derived from renewable natural resources, in particular those coming from agro-industrial wastes, and their applications in various fields, such as (bio)sensing of heme proteins and azo dyes, as photocatalysts for photodegradation of organic pollutants through hybrid CDs/titanate nanowires, and as fillers in mixed matrix iongel membranes for highly effective CO2 separations. He has coordinated 8 research projects and participate as team member in another 8 projects. He has supervised 4 PhD and 16 MSc students at different institutions. Refereeing activity has been pursued for over 45 indexed scientific journals (over 160 reviews), and also as grant agencies/foundations reviewer. He has taken the invited position of member and president of External Evaluation Committees of licenciatura and master degree courses in the field of Chemical Engineering for the Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior (A3ES).
