Cátia Vanessa Queijo Brito

Cátia Brito finished her bachelor¿s degree in Biology in 2009, during which she also studied at the University of Gdansk, Poland, under the Erasmus Program. In 2012, she concluded her Master¿s degree in Environmental Engineering, in which she studied the use of cover crops vs tillage in olive orchards by monitoring the tree¿s physiological responses. In January 2019, she obtained her PhD title in Agricultural Production Chains - From Fork to Farm (FCT grant for the Doctoral Program) from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro in association with the University of Minho, Portugal. The PhD included a period at the University of Oviedo in Spain to perform immunohistochemistry studies in leaves. The focus of the PhD thesis was the study of the foliar application of kaolin and salicylic acid as agronomic strategies to improve olive trees¿ tolerance to abiotic stresses. In the last two years, to fill some gaps related to the agronomic area, she got a bachelor¿s degree in Agronomic Engineering. At the same time, she was involved in 8 research projects and collaborated on many others. These research projects were: ¿Cover cropping: the decisive strategy for the sustainable management of the rainfed olive orchards¿; ¿Operational Group - New practices in rainfed olive groves: strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change¿; ¿INTERACT ¿ Integrative Research in Environment, Agro-Chains and Technology; INNOVINE&WINE ¿ Vineyard and Wine Innovation Platform¿; ¿ABCyeasts: A portfolio of yeast antagonists for biocontrol of phytopathogenic agents in a sustainable viticulture¿; ¿AgriFoodXXI ¿line Grapevine and olive tree abiotic stresses assessment and search for sustainable adaptation strategies of cropping systems under Mediterranean-like climates¿; ¿T-LAMP ¿ Turf Lighting Advanced Mobile Platform¿; and at the moment, she is employed as a junior researcher in the project ¿ZEONI: Optimizing the synergy between zeolites, nitrification inhibitors and cover crops to promote vine climate resilience and ecosystem services¿. The main aim of her research is to increase crops¿ economic and environmental sustainability. For this, she seeks to develop and disseminate innovative agricultural practices and technologies to mitigate climate change, through the reduction of greenhouse gases and the increase of carbon sequestration, and to adapt crops to adverse environmental conditions. She evaluated the effectiveness of applied practices by monitoring plants¿ anatomical, physiological and biochemical responses (e.g. leaf histology, photosynthetic performance, water status, primary and secondary metabolism, oxidative indicators, plant nutrition), crops growth, productivity and quality (e.g vigor, secondary metabolites, antioxidant activity, olive oil and wine quality indices), and the evaluation of soil health and quality indicators (e.g. glomalin related-soil proteins, chemical attributes). She worked with different plant species, but the main focus has been the Mediterranean crops olive tree and grapevine. She published 22 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 12 of which as 1st author (Q1), and 2 book chapters (1st author), holding an h-index of 11 (Scopus). She has authored/co-authored 32 oral and 38 poster communications in National and International conferences. She enrolled the team of a research project (MiKS4Vine) and was a trainer in courses, workshops and training actions. She supervised 1 master thesis and co-supervised another, and has partaken on the jury of 1 PhD and 2 master degrees. She was Co-Guest Editor in the special issue "Environmental Stress on Crops Physiology and Biochemistry" of Agronomy, is a Review Editor in 'Viticulture, Pomology, and Soft Fruits' section of Frontiers in Agronomy, and has been a reviewer of 21 scientific articles for publication in international journals.
