Inês Morão holds a PhD in Biology and Ecology of Global Changes from Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon, with research work developed at the Polytechnic University of Leiria and also in IQOG-CSIC in Madrid, Spain. Her professional expertise encompasses ecotoxicology, marine biology and conservation, biomarker analysis, and differential gene expression, as well as other molecular techniques applied to marine organisms, particularly sea turtles. During her bachelor’s thesis project, she conducted fieldwork in São Tomé and Príncipe, where she had her first contact with sea turtle research. During this period, she collaborated with local NGOs in awareness-raising and conservation actions focused on sea turtle nesting areas. For her MSc thesis, Inês Morão collected tissue samples from turtles for molecular analysis, aiming to assess the impact of metal contamination and persistent organic pollutants on the health and fitness of sea turtle populations. This research line was further developed throughout her PhD. In addition to sea turtles, her research experience includes the application of ecotoxicological and molecular tools to other marine organisms, such as rotifers within the scope of the ProTEoME project, and more recently to harmful dinoflagellates under the BLOOMS project, focusing on toxicological effects at low trophic levels. Throughout her scientific career, Inês Morão has delivered seven oral presentations at international conferences, including ICYMARE, IOCTO, and SETAC, and has given invited lectures and outreach talks in Portugal and in São Tomé and Príncipe. She maintains an active connection to the scientific community, being part of the organising team of the ICYMARE conference held in Germany and an active member and Co-chair of the OYSTER (Orienting Young ScienTists of EuromaRine) Working Group within the EuroMarine network, contributing to activities targeting early-career researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds. She has also acted as a peer reviewer for international scientific journals, including Environmental Research (Elsevier), Ecotoxicology, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, and Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (Springer).
