Helena Soares (HS) is a group leader at Nova Medical School (NMS) in Lisbon, where she currently leads a team of 4 researchers: 1 post-doc, 2 PhD students (both medical doctors) and 1 MSc student. HS graduated in Pharmacy from University of Coimbra in 2001 and completed her PhD in Immune Physiology at The Rockefeller University in 2006 with the support of a Gulbenkian PhD Program in Biomedicine fellowship. Next, she obtained a Long-term EMBO fellowship to develop her post-doctoral research at Institut Pasteur in Paris. In 2014, HS returned to Portugal through the competitive FCT Investigator Program first as a visiting scientist at Gulbenkian Institute for Science and in 2015 she started her lab at NMS. HS has secured Funding for the Institution of 9.5 M€ as Executive Board Director and Thematic Line Coordinator of iNOVA4Health research Unit (2025-29) and lab funding from Horizon Europe (EVCA and MPS Twinnings, as team member), and from FCT, ESCMID, Gilead and Pfizer as PI. Her lab’s mission is to understand how the tissue environment regulates the immune response in humans and how it is affected by biological variables (sex, age and temperature). Since the start of her lab, HS has published 16 articles in prestigious journals, supervised to completion 11 Master dissertations and 6 PhD thesis. These 10 years of experience as a PI in a medical school has enabled her to establish an ambitious, disruptive and cross-disciplinary program bridging clinical (10 hospitals) and fundamental research, which has provided her with consolidated experience in all aspects of research and development, the design, and the coordination of multiple projects. HS provision of scientific advice at International level includes being a co-coordinator of the EFIS-study group on Immune Sex Differences, an expert and collaborator of the European Commission JRC CIAO project. HS regularly acts as reviewer for several important Immunology- related International Funding Agencies and scientific journals. HS has established several links with the industry including Memorandums of understanding (Medinfar and Pfizer), industry sponsored projects (Gilead, Pfizer and MSD) and the coordination of Masterclasses (Janssen and Sanofi) for health professionals. Recently, HS was invited to be a consultant for Merck Sharp and Dohme program on vaccine literacy. She has conceptualized and coordinate a PhD-course on Sex Differential Health in Clinical Practice and Biomedical Research, translating emerging evidence into clinical and experimental design competencies. In parallel, she coordinates an advanced course on¿Vaccine Hesitancy¿that integrates social and biological sciences to equip healthcare professionals with evidence-based tools. HS has received international awards/honors, including by the European Federation of Immunologycal Societies and EMBO. She is invited to give lectures at international conferences (USA, Spain) and international courses organized by both academia (10) and by the pharmaceutic industry (4) and has participated in multiple outreach and science communication activities with the media (more than 30). HS is currently Member of the Executive Board and coordinator of a Thematic Line of iNOVA4Health Research Unit. Between 2021-2024, she was the General Secretary of the Portuguese Society of Immunology (SPI) and she is currently member of the SPI Fiscal Board.
