I am an archaeologist and heritage scientist with degrees from Sapienza Università di Roma (BA Archaeology) and University College London (MSc, PhD Archaeological Science). I am interested in the investigation of past technological societies to reconstruct how people made things and how their practical knowledge shaped their identities and their beliefs. Under the guidance of some of the most influential scholars in archaeological science, I have built an expertise in the scientific analysis of materials related to high-temperature processes such as metallurgy and the production of glass, pottery and pigments. I was trained and I worked at some of the highest-ranking institutions for the field, namely Sapienza, UCL, and the University of Cambridge, where I was exposed to vibrant research environments that made my own interests multifaceted and wide-reaching. During the PhD at UCL I developed a particular curiosity towards the history of science, which prompted me to explore the contribution that my own archaeological perspective could bring. As a result, I have spent most of my career so far developing the so-called “archaeology of alchemy and chemistry”, a cross-disciplinary methodological framework that integrates a material perspective into the history of science and knowledge. After the PhD, I moved to VICARTE, whose strongly interdisciplinary vocation gave me the opportunity to pursue my interests at the crossroads between art and science, while expanding my own perspectives on heritage materials as well as my scientific skills. There, I took up a fellowship in the FCT-funded project ChromAz, where we investigate the colour technology of 16th-18th-century Portuguese azulejos, combining the analysis of historical artwork with the experimental replication of pigment recipes. My research has generated new knowledge and innovative methodological tools of investigation in different areas. These contributions are expressed and discussed in my scientific output, covering topics which include archaeometallurgy, glass making and ceramics and pigment technology, but also the archaeology of early European colonies in the Americas and the investigation of alchemical practices in the Renaissance. My work has been published in different formats and for a range of audiences. I have authored numerous articles on established journals in the realms of archaeology, glass studies, heritage science, analytical chemistry and science history. As part of a broader dissemination aim, my research also appears on authoritative magazines such as New Scientist and Viewpoint, and on academic blogs. I worked as teaching assistant in the archaeological science laboratory of UCL and at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge, providing training and support in the preparation and analysis of archaeological samples to both internal students and external laboratory users. I regularly lecture and lead seminars on topics related to my research during master courses and towards more mixed audiences. I participate in a number of outreach initiatives aimed at disseminating the work carried out by my institution to the general public, at festivals, open days and art expositions. The innovative nature of my cross-disciplinary research has been particularly appreciated by the community of science historians. This led to my participation in numerous national and international conferences and workshops, where my archaeological approach to the history of science and technology reached an ever-increasing public of specialists. I have established numerous synergies with scholars across-disciplines, which bears witness to the potential of my research in contributing to future trajectories of both archaeology and the history of science.
