I obtained my PhD in Human Biology in 2010 from the University of Porto. From 2011 to 2013, I was a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Haigis’ lab at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, USA. Since 2014, I have been an independent researcher at i3S/IPATIMUP, leading a research line on tumor microenvironment interactions and KRAS oncogenic signaling. During this time, I also became a mother of three children (2012, 2017, 2020). My h-index is 24 (Google Scholar), with over 3,000 citations, reflecting the impact of my work. I have published 38 papers in international journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer Discovery, Gastroenterology, Cancer Research, and Oncogene, with more than 70% in Q1 journals, and 7 book chapters (5 as senior author). RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS & EXPERTIZE During my PhD, I characterized gastrointestinal cancers, focusing on alterations in the KRAS-MAPK and PI3K pathways. I was the first to describe and functionally characterize MLK3 mutations in gastrointestinal cancers, demonstrating that different cancer subtypes not only harbor distinct driver mutations but also show variability within the same gene. As a postdoc, I worked on the functional characterization of RAS mutations in colorectal cancer, gaining expertise in in vitro and in vivo models, which remain central to my current research. Since establishing my independent research group in 2014, I have focused on the crosstalk between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment, particularly fibroblasts and immune cells, and how KRAS oncogenic signaling influences these interactions, disease progression, and therapy resistance. I am also engaged in novel therapy development and drug repurposing for cancer treatment. As an independent researcher, I have published 7 papers as senior author, 12 collaborative papers, and 4 book chapters. My team’s work has been recognized with several research awards. I have also participated in technology transfer and entrepreneurship programs to translate fundamental research into therapeutic applications. SUPERVISION & MENTORSHIP Since 2014, I have supervised: 2 junior students 1 visiting MSc student 10 MSc students 3 international visiting students (2 PhD, 1 BSc) 3 research fellows, all currently pursuing PhDs under my supervision Currently, I am the main supervisor of 4 PhD students and the co-supervisor of 2 PhD students and 3 MSc students. FUNDING & COLLABORATIONS Since 2014, I have secured €753K in salary grants and €591K in research funding, including: €434K as PI (4 project grants) €95K as co-PI (2 projects) €62K as co-investigator (3 projects) I have established a multidisciplinary and international network of collaborators, encompassing life sciences, chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical research, to support and enhance my research activities. SCIENTIFIC RECOGNITION & LEADERSHIP My work has been nationally and internationally recognized through: 8 invited and 3 selected presentations at scientific meetings Peer review for over 20 renowned journals and 5 funding agencies Participation in 14 scientific juries Guest-editing 2 special issues in Cells and 1 in International Journal of Molecular Sciences Editorial role at Frontiers in Gastroenterology (Gastroenterology and Cancer section) Additionally, I served on the scientific committee for one national and one international conference and am currently co-organizing the SINAL international meeting.
