Manuel António Facas Vicente holds a Ph.D. in Engineering, a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the University of Coimbra. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC). He is an integrated researcher at the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra (CMUC) and collaborates with the Institute for Systems Engineering and Computers of Coimbra (INESC Coimbra). His research career bridges theoretical Mathematics and practical applications, focusing on three core areas: Numerical Linear Algebra and Approximation Theory, Mathematical Modelling applied to Calibrations and Quality Control and, Applied Statistics. With an academic career spanning over 33 years,. his theoretical work focuses on advanced topics in Algebra, and Geometry, Approximation Theory, Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation. His scientific contributions are consistently published in high-impact journals, including Linear Algebra and its Applications and the Journal of Mathematical Sciences. Facas Vicente has extensive experience in teaching Statistics across various academic levels, from Bachelor’s to Ph.D. programs (in areas such as Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy, Public Administration and Engeneering). He has developed a strong profile in interdisciplinary mathematical modeling, applying statistical tools to solve complex problems in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Sports, and Finance. He has supervised dozens of students across different academic levels, including master’s theses, undergraduate research projects and internships, mainly in the areas of Engineering and Statistics (applied in fields such as Quality Control and Economy and Finances, among others). Furthermore, he coordinates advanced technical courses in R Programming and Data Analysis, having authored a technical manual on the R software for statistical applications. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and serves as a statistical expert on the Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) of the European Metrology Network for Mathematics and Statistics (EMN Mathmet). Currently, he is a key member of the FireSys project (2025–2028), where he contributes to the development of intelligent decision-support systems for forest fire management through mathematical modeling.
