Cristina Filipe, an artist, researcher, educator, cultural programmer and curator, is currently collaborating researcher at the Centre for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR) at the Catholic University of Porto — School of Arts where she completed her PhD in Heritage Studies with a grant from the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia with Gonçalo de Vasconcelos e Sousa as her supervisor. Her researcher work focus on the contemporary jewellery in Portugal since the 1960s and its relationships with the Portuguese historical, art and social contexts and with some aspects from the international field. She began her artistic training at the Escola Artística António Arroio and, in 1983, joined Ar.Co–Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual, where she studied sculpture and jewellery. In 1987, she continued her studies in jewellery at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam with a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The following year she returned to Ar.Co, this time as a teacher and, from 2004, as head of the jewellery department, positions she held until 2015. Further, in 1992, Filipe completed a student exchange programme at the Royal College of Art in London and, in 2001, completed her master's degree in Arts & Design at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design in Farnham, again as a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholar. In 2017, she was awarded the Susan Beech Mid-Career Grant from the Art Jewelry Forum for the production of the book "Contemporary Jewellery in Portugal: From the Avant-garde of the 1960s to the Early 21st Century", which was launched in 2019 at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, where she curated the exhibition "Summer Guests: Contemporary Jewellery in Portugal", that placed contemporary jewellery in dialogue with the Modern, Contemporary and Lalique collections. In 2023 she published the 2nd edition of the same book in Portuguese. Throughout her artistic career, Cristina Filipe has made jewellery in various mediums and her works have been exhibited in Portugal and abroad and published in many national and international exhibition catalogues. She has participated in various exhibitions – both with her own work and as curator – and has conducted several workshops and teaching exchanges in Portugal and abroad. In 2004, she co-founded PIN–Associação Portuguesa de Joalharia Contemporânea, and she chaired until 2023. She has programmed, produced and curated many international events. She is the author of several articles, essays and texts for contemporary art exhibition catalogues. Her work is present in private and public collections such as that of the MUDE–Museu do Design, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and of Ar.Co. She is currently engaged in the creation of a Digital Archive which will gather all the information related to her PhD research over the last decade. The systematisation and cataloguing of this documentation, including photographs, drawings, documents and books, will not only guarantee the preservation of this heritage, but also make it accessible to other researchers, institutions, specialists and curators working in the discipline. She was the creator and general curator of the 1st Lisbon Contemporary Jewellery Biennial — Cold Sweat (2021, a partnership between PIN, MUDE, SCML and SNBA that included an anthological exhibition of a Portuguese artist, an international group exhibition and a Colloquium on a theme in compliance with the United Nations 2030 Agenda goals. Aware of the importance of this research and the preservation of this heritage, the Imprensa Nacional has invited (2021) Cristina Filipe to coordinate the new collection "J" centred on jewellery artists in Portugal. The 1rst volume came out in October 2024 and focus in the work of one of the pioneer artists in Portugal and founderof the jewelelry course in Ar.Co in Lisbon, Tereza Seabra.

2021/12 - 2024/10/04 'THE SENTIMENTAL JEWELLERY OF LOUISE-MARIE D'ORLÉANS. AN ARTISTIC REACTIVATION OF MATERIAL MEMORI'. During this research she investigated and reactivated the lost sentimental jewellery of first Belgian Queen Louise-Marie d’Orléans from a contemporary point of view. The newly created objects, which are exhibited all over the world, construct an alternative version of the myth of Louise-Marie d'Orléans. They reintroduce this almost forgotten Queen to the public and demonstrate how artistic practices can be deployed to fight oblivion.'

2024/03/08 - 2024/03/08 'CURIOUS ENCOUNTERS: CRISTINA FILIPE, NEDDA EL-ASMAR AND BARBARA PREDA' This talk dives into how design in itself is about curiosity - about the world, people, behaviors and practices. How can curiosity be a vehicle in bettering this world and the way designs are shaping it? How is curiosity connected to care - care about what you create, how you create it (perhaps?) and how designs should live with and among people? Is curiosity in that sense more caring and empathetic than, say, ‘exploration’ - a word and term that lies very close to exploitation?

2024/10/04 'THE SENTIMENTAL JEWELLERY OF LOUISE-MARIE D’ORLÉANS. AN ARTISTIC REACTIVATION OF MATERIAL MEMORIES'. They reintroduce this almost forgotten Queen to the public and demonstrate how artistic practices can be deployed to fight oblivion.
