António Carvalho works as an Assistant Professor of Sociology (tenure-track) at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra since February 2023 and is a researcher of the Centre for Social Studies. Previously he held a position as Assistant Researcher (Investigador Auxiliar) at the Centre for Social Studies, where he was leading the research project "Plastic Biopolitics: addressing the micropolitics of neoliberal environmentalism", funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology within the scope of the Scientific Employment Stimulus - 4th edition. Between 2018-2022 he was the Principal Investigator of TROPO: Anthropocenic Ontologies in Portugal - Social Movements, Public Policies and Emerging Technologies, the first R&D project funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in the field of sociology to study the Anthropocene. He is currently the vice-coordinator of the Risk Observatory (OSIRIS) and is a member of the Ethics Committee of the Centre for Social Studies and of the editorial staff of Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais. His current research interests include social studies of mindfulness, the Anthropocene and affect. His work has been published in numerous international peer-reviewed journals such as Public Understanding of Science, Energy Research & Social Science, Social Movement Studies and The Sociological Review. His first book, titled 'Antropoceno(s): crise climática, ontologia e o social' (Anthropocene(s): climate crisis, ontology and the social) will be published by Coimbra University Press in 2024.
