Luam Clarindo is a percussionist, member of INET-md's research group Creation, Performance, and Artistic Research, and a PhD student in the Artistic Creation Doctoral Program at the University of Aveiro. His work explores the intersection between the arts and digital technology through experimental performances with hybrid acoustic and digital musical instruments, and his artistic and research activities were presented in Brazil, Portugal, and Spain. He explores gesture-based sonic modulation and improvisation as methods for embodied sound creation. Luam holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Music (2019, 2023) in Sound Creation from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), supervised by Dr. Indioney Rodrigues, and studied percussion at the Conservatory of Popular Brazilian Music (CMPB) in Curitiba. Luam’s undergraduate thesis focused on improvisation and extended techniques for the pandeiro, and his master’s thesis, Movement-Sound: Creative Interactions between Music and Dance in Free Improvisation Performances, involved interviews and practical laboratories with local music and dance groups. The research was presented and published at the 14th Colloquium of the Graduate Program in Music at UFPR and as a paper published in the O Mosaico journal. From 2017 to 2023, Luam curated and performed in Improviso Dança e Música, a monthly free improvisation series in Curitiba. He directed and performed Movement-Sound (2023) at Casa Hoffmann – Center for Movement Studies in Curitiba and later performed at MusicDance Portugal and Espaço Experimental (Centro em Movimento – c.e.m., Lisbon) in 2024. He performed solo at the Desconcerto Free Improvisation Festival (Curitiba, 2023) and at the Frequencias Raras Festival de Música y Video Experimental (Madrid, 2024). His electroacoustic works Berra Boi Eletroacústico and Water Landing (2024) were released by Núcleo Música Nova and the Brazilian Society of Electroacoustic Music (SBME). In 2025, his audiovisual works Batucada Eletroacústica and Hyperfriction-drum were released by the International Festival of Improvisation and Sound Art (Improfest) and SBME. In 2025, he introduced and performed with Hypercuíca, a hybrid digital-acoustic instrument he designed and developed as part of his artistic research, at Intermediartes: International Conference on Media, Arts and Interaction (ESMAE, Porto) and at the Digital and Technological Performativities International Colloquium at the University of Aveiro, where he also presented a paper. In November 2025, Luam gave a masterclass and a performance at the BINNAR Festival (Vila Nova de Famalicão) and appeared in Rodrigo Constanzo’s video series Play Talk Play. In January 2026, he organized and led a workshop for a community of cuíca players in Curitiba, presenting his Hypercuíca and promoting exchange between experimental practice and traditional performance. In 2026, he worked as a percussionist and arranger in Songs of Seeking: Fragmentos de Viagem, an INET-md project funded by Direção-Geral das Artes (DGArtes), recording drums and percussion for the project's album and performing in two public presentations. Luam is a member of the SBME and of Sonoscopia Cultural Association (Porto). Since 2017, he has organized Encontro de Pandeiros, a series of workshops with the pandeiro community, with recent editions at FIPCuritiba (Curitiba, 2023), Abadá Capoeira (Lisbon, 2024), and Casa da Horta (Porto, 2026).
