I am a bryologist, with a passion for bryophyte ecology and conservation. I am one of the few active bryologists in Portugal, with 20 years of experience, mostly dedicated to updating the distribution patterns of bryophytes in Portugal and Europe, analyzing different processes affecting species richness and composition at different scales and predicting bryophyte species’ vulnerability under climate change. I have developed relevant scientific skills related with bryophyte taxonomy, community ecology, ecological modelling and ecological monitoring. During my PhD I acquired taxonomic and ecological knowledge about bryophyte communities from mountain rock outcrops in Portugal and developed skills in spatial and statistical analyses of ecological data. I managed scientific bryophyte collections (10000 specimens) at Porto Herbarium and led several research expeditions to Portugal to study bryophyte diversity. I was awarded with two Synthesys grants to study particular bryophyte collections at the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid and Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. My PhD led to different types of publications, including a description of a new bryophyte species to science, rediscovery of species that were thought to be extinct, updated checklists, online datasets and scientific papers that quantified the influence of micro and macro-scale variables on the community variability of saxicolous bryophytes communities in Portugal. I then moved on to a Post-Doc, with the aim of developing relevant experience on bryophyte diversity in the Iberian Peninsula, ecological modelling and conservation under global change. This was a joint research grant between BIOPOLIS-CIBIO and Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid. As a bryophyte specialist, I contributed to the Atlas and Red Data Book of Endangered Bryophytes of Portugal and integrated the team of several international projects. I was involved in the Iberian Bryophyte Flora project, that covers all the bryophytic diversity of the Iberian Peninsula, which resulted in the publication of two book chapters as co-author. I also contributed to the European Red List of Bryophytes, both as author and reviewer of bryophyte species assessments. I have experience in teaching as Junior Teaching Assistant of practical classes of Molecular cell biology, giving lectures and practical classes about bryophytes at master courses and as a trainer at advanced courses for PhD students or at accredited courses for teachers. During 2017 I was self-employed at Yscience and provided science education support services, for students of the 1st cycle of basic education. I co-supervised one MSc dissertation, and supervised one LSc/BSc degree dissertation, one short-visit and training of a foreign student and one extra-curricular volunteer Internship of a foreign student. I have been actively engaged in science outreach activities, by coordinating hands-on activities such as workshops, photo exhibitions and citizen science activities, as well as writing field guides and articles in magazines. Between 2017 and 2025 I was contracted as researcher at BIOPOLIS-CIBIO and I have been building research independence through solid international collaboration. In 2022 I received funding from the Foundation for Science and Technology to lead the BryoMicroClim research project about combining microclimate sensor networks and models to uncover the vulnerability of bryophytes to climate change. In 2023 I was awarded with the prestigious research grant from National Geographic Society. I am a member of the IUCN Bryophyte Specialist group and an external collaborator at the Museum of Natural history and Science of the University of Porto.
