Joana Alves is a Junior Researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering of University of Minho (CEB-UM). Joana Alves has great experience in anaerobic microbial communities (natural or synthetic), physiology of the anaerobic microorganisms and also on anaerobic microbial processes and bioreactors. Currently, her research topic focuses on biological conversion of gas streams, studying both the microbiology and the technological aspects of gas fermentation. She was PI of a research project (INNOVsyn: Innovative strategies for syngas fermentation) that finished recently (2022) with 1 master student, 2 PhD students, 3 research fellows and 1 contracted post-doc that are working within the project team. Joana Alves completed her PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering in 2013 (School of Engineering, University of Minho), and completed her graduation in Biology in 2005 (Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto). Joana Alves was a visiting researcher at the Laboratory of Microbiology, Wageningen University (The Netherlands) in 2005 and later, for her PhD project, between 2011-2012. She has authored a total of 23 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and 1 book chapter, over 434 citations and an H index of 13 (Scopus 2023), with 13 papers published in the last 5 years. Approximately 95% of the papers are included in the 1st and 2nd quartiles. In the past 5 years, she was presenting author or co-author of 8 oral and 17 poster communications in several international and national scientific meetings, and have 3 papers in scientific meetings as well. Additionally, Joana Alves supervises 4 trainees, 4 masters and 2 doctoral student (1 as main supervisor; 1 was mentored on a daily basis in the laboratory). She has been involved in higher education at the University of Minho since 2019, where she has already won a pedagogic merit award. Joana Alves is member of several journal scientific committees, as reviewer or as guest editor (e.g. special issue in Frontiers in Microbiology) and has been participated as jury member of MSc and PhD thesis. She has participated in several scientific dissemination events, in addition to being part of the organizing committees of some of these events and scientific congresses.
