Carlos Corela is an integrated researcher at the Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL) of the Faculty of Science at the University of Lisbon (IDL-FCUL), where he is a member of the Research Group 3 (Solid Earth Dynamics). Holds a degree in Geophysics, a master's degree in Physics Engineering (Instrumentation), and a PhD in Geophysics. His research interests encompass seismology, ambient seismic noise tomography, sensors and dataloggers, and related subjects, including ocean bottom seismometers (OBS), seabed observatories and Water Column, echolocation of marine mammals, and submarine cable studies. His areas of expertise include the engineering of deep-sea instruments used for seismology, oceanography, and biology, encompassing the development, construction, and maintenance of both mechanical and electronic components. Corela has made significant contributions to the academic community as the first and co-author of 20 peer-reviewed international scientific publications, a book chapter, and as an invited speaker at numerous conferences. He has conducted professional training sessions and presented his work at national and international conferences. In addition to his research work, Corela has developed a range of skills, including serving as an instructor in Electronics and Geophysics and acting as a scientific consultant in marine geophysics. He advises the Portuguese government on the integration of sensors into submarine telecommunication fibre optic cables, set to connect mainland Portugal with the Azores and Madeira archipelagos by 2027. Furthermore, he is a member of the working group of the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks, focusing on the development of standards for marine seismology data and metadata. His research has significantly enhanced the understanding of seismic activity in southwest Iberia. Corela has led the Project DUNE as Principal Investigator and coordinated a contract with IFREMER for fieldwork in Brazil, Morocco and Mozambique. Elaborated on numerous national and international scientific projects and has supervised various research endeavours across South America, Africa, and Europe, both on land and at sea. Recently, he was honoured as Vice-President of EMSO-PT. This national infrastructure is part of the European consortium EMSO-ERIC, which brings together eight countries and coordinates a network of underwater observatories dedicated to continuous monitoring of the ocean floor and water column.
