João Miguel Figueiredo Narciso

João Narciso is a researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico and an integrated member of Centre for Natural Resources and Environment (CERENA), with 15 years of experience in geoscience research, especially in subsurface characterization and modeling applied to seismic hazard, geotechnics, soil and earth resources. He holds degrees in Geology and Civil Engineering, both from Univ. Coimbra, and also an MSc in Geological and Mining Engineering from the same university and an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from IST. João has a Ph.D. in Earth Resources from IST, Univ. Lisboa, with a dissertation entitled “Geostatistical inversion of geophysical data for near-surface modelling and characterization”. He has several articles published in international journals and 1 book chapter, more than 40 conference presentations, organized 3 scientific events, participated as Researcher in 10 scientific projects and in his professional activities has interacted with various researchers from research centres in Europe, North and South America and Africa. Currently, his main research interests are related to the modelling and characterization of natural and anthropogenic near-surface environments, using geophysical inversion, probabilistic and machine learning methods

Site-condition map for Portugal based on Vs30 values and evaluation of the applicability of Vs30 proxies. Maps providing information on site conditions are essential tools to accurately represent the spatial distribution of ground motions, both in seismic hazard maps and in instrumental intensity maps (ShakeMaps). Project SCENE, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, aims at characterizing the site conditions for Portugal and to outline a first-order site effects map to be use. 2013.
