Célio Fernandes obtained his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Minho (Portugal), where he received the Engineer António de Almeida Award, a prize for students with the best final graduation score (16/20). After graduating, C. Fernandes obtained his MSc degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Porto (Portugal). During this period, C. Fernandes has employed spectral methods to describe the melt flow that occurs in the polymer extrusion process. Afterwards, C. Fernandes joined the Department of Polymer and Composites at the University of Minho (Portugal), where he completed his Ph.D. degree in Science and Engineering of Polymers and Composites in December 2012. During this period, C. Fernandes made important contributions to the field of Injection Molding Process by applying multi-objective evolutionary algorithms to solve the inverse problem of finding the best injection molding parameters to achieve predefined criteria. During his post-doctoral studies, C. Fernandes has been working with the open-source computational fluid dynamics library OpenFOAM. From February 2024, C. Fernandes joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Porto as an Assistant Professor. He has established new numerical methods for the solution of viscoelastic matrix-based fluids using the finite volume method. His main findings during this period were published in some of the top journals in the field, namely Acta Biomaterialia (Q1, 10/89, IF=8.947), Engineering with Computers (Q1, 4/133, IF=7.963), Applied Thermal Engineering (Q1, 12/130, IF=5.295), Polymers (Q1, 18/90, IF=4.967), Computers and Fluids (Q1, 32/133, IF=3.013) and Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics (Q1, 25/133, IF=2.670). He has published 55 papers in peer-reviewed ISI journals (including 4 book-chapters), 4 books, ~80posters and presentations (12 documents/year from 2021 to 2025). He carried out research abroad at MIT/USA, UZAG/Croatia, CINECA/Italy, TXSU/USA, and ICMC/Brazil. In the last 5 years, he became a member of 5 international editorial journals, Gels (Q1, IF=5.0), Polymers (Q1, IF=4.329), Micromachines (Q2, IF=2.891), Applied Sciences (Q2, IF=2.838), and Mathematics (Q1, IF=2.1), and has reviewed +70 papers. He was also an organizer/member of 23 conference committees and was invited for event participation has a speaker in 20 conferences. C. Fernandes was awarded as PI of 8 FCT projects. Additionally, he participates/ed in 8 R&D nationally funded projects by FCT and ANI. Finally, he is/was co-PI in 2 internationally funded projects and was awarded as PI in 2 international HPC calls. Since 2016, he has taught various subjects such as Calculus II, Numerical Analysis, Linear Algebra and Analytical Geometry, Computational Mechanics in Polymer Engineering, Modeling of Polymer Processing and Behavior, Graphic Representation I, and Plastic Extrusion A II. He has supervised (or I am currently supervising) and mentoring/tutoring 11 post-doc/researchers scholars, 8 PhD students, and 20 Master Thesis. He has examined as a jury member 4 PhD candidates and 18 Master's students. After his PhD degree, C. Fernandes published 96.2% (50/52) of the publications (without PhD supervisors), in the last 10 years, 58.3% (28/48) being the first author, or corresponding author or the last author, from which 64.3% (18/28) were published in Q1 peer-reviewed journals. In addition, his publication indices in Scopus have increased in the last 10 years from 7 to 55 documents in the present. In the same period, the citations of his work increased to 942 citations, and his last 5 years' h-index evolution also reflects an increase from 2 to 17 (Scopus accessed on 28 January 2026).
