I hold a Biology degree from the University of Coimbra and an MSc and PhD in Biotechnology from Instituto Superior Técnico, UL. During my postdoc at ITQB NOVA, I studied the archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus, uncovering its accumulation of organic solutes in response to extreme heat and challenging long-standing concepts of microbial physiology. This led to their application as stabilizers (5 papers, 120+ citations, 1 patent). As a senior researcher in Adriano Henriques' lab, I investigated Bacillus subtilis spore coat enzymes, particularly a laccase now widely recognized (2 papers, 500+ citations). In 2004, I founded the Microbial and Enzyme Technology Lab at ITQB NOVA, focusing on bacterial enzymes for lignocellulose decomposition, particularly lignin. Unlike fungi, bacterial systems remain underexplored but offer advantages in gene cloning, protein production, and enzyme engineering. I became an Assistant Professor in 2014, the same year I was awarded an FCT Investigator Consolidator Grant (scored 9/9). I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022 and defended my Agregação in Molecular Biosciences in 2024. My research in Molecular Biotechnology aims to develop novel enzymes for biomass valorization—an EU priority for sustainable chemicals, energy, and fuels. I have published 100+ papers, with six journal cover highlights, three book chapters, and 80+ invited talks. I have led six national projects, contributed to ten more, and secured EC funding for SOPHIED, BIORENEW, and SMARTBOX. I coordinated the B-LigZymes H2020 project (2019-2024) and now the MSCA Doctoral Network COMENZE (2025-2029). I have supervised 9 postdocs, 15 PhDs, 20 MScs, 25+ graduate students, and 50+ undergraduates. Since 2013, I have served on the Scientific Committee of the PhD Program in Sustainable Chemistry and contributed to ITQB NOVA’s Pedagogical Council and Infrastructures Committee. Beyond ITQB NOVA, I was part of the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (2014-2020), and I currently serve on the Executive Board of the Portuguese Society of Biotechnology, of the European Federation of Biotechnology, where I am also co-chair of the Biocatalysis Division.
