Adriana Ressurreição has completed her PhD degree at the University of the Azores in 2012. Adriana is a marine social scientist with a background in natural sciences. Her research is interdisciplinary in nature with a focus on marine socioeconomics, from coastal to deep sea ecosystems, producing knowledge and information to support appropriated policy responses and providing decision makers, managers and marine stakeholders with a range of social and economic analyses. These analyses cover topics such as blue economy strategies, marine ecosystems valuations (market and non-market), public perception surveys, trade-off analysis, socio-economic impact of marine sectors, marine and coastal tourism, payments for ecosystem services, compensation schemes, participatory approaches, marine conservation and marine protected areas (MPAs). She was involved in three EU Horizon Projects, which provided an excellent working experience with international and interdisciplinary teams: ATLAS “A Trans-Atlantic assessment and deep-water ecosystem-based spatial management plan for Europe”, AQUACROSS “Ecosystem Based Management for EU Aquatic Ecosystems” and the ongoing SUMMER “Sustainable Management of Mesopelagic Resources”. In ATLAS, Adriana was closely involved with WP5 “Valuing deep sea ecosystems services and potential for blue growth”. Main initiatives developed within ATLAS aimed at (i) identifying risks and pressures to deep-water ecosystems in the North Atlantic from existing and potential future economic activity and ocean dynamics, (ii) valuing public deep-sea preferences for deep sea conservation and (iii) testing public deep-sea awareness and literacy. In AQUACROSS, as an external consultant, to facilitate the stakeholders participatory process “Towards Equitable MPAs. In SUMMER, Adriana is coordinating task 6.2: “Economic evaluation of ecosystem services supported by the mesopelagic ecosystem”, with particular focus on recreational benefits. Since 2018, Adriana has also been involved in a pioneering project aiming at creating the first community-based MPA: The Natural Marine Parque Algarve Reef – Pedra do Valado (NMPAR-PV) in the south of Portugal (Algarve), through a bottom-up participatory process involving more than 76 entities (i.e. fisher’s associations, Municipalities, marine tourist operators, schools, etc.. From 2013 to 2019 she also took part in the European Marine Board Working Group on Valuing Marine Ecosystems. The main objective of this working group was to produce a short and targeted Position Paper highlighting the importance of goods and services provided by marine ecosystems and suggesting path towards bridging valuation of marine ecosystems and effective decision-making procedures in Europe. From 2023- onwards, Adriana is a member of the Management Committee of the COST ACTION CA22122: Rethinking the Blue Economy: Socio-Ecological Impacts and Opportunities (RethinkBlue). Also in 2023, Adriana was also appointed, by FCT, as an expert in the United Nations World Ocean Assessment III (WOA III) including socioeconomic issues). Adriana has done extensive consultancy work for several regional, national and international entities/projects. Noteworthy was the invitation, by Região Turismo Algarve (RTA), to develop the Ecotourism Regional Program for the Algarve, and, by ANP/WWF, to produce a review of the marine ecosystem services and benefits to human wellbeing, supported by the national network of MPAs. At present, she is also developing a large-scale perception survey and a market-based assessment aiming at collecting information about people’s values, views, and emotional connections on Syngnathids, at the European level, within Biodiversa+ scientific research project EUROSYNG. Currently Adriana, is a researcher at Algarve – CCMAR, working within Benagil Project, where she is exploring key issues for the sustainability of the marine coastal tourism sector and its close links to MPAs.
