Ana Teresa Tavares graduated in Biology from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa in 1993 and joined the Gulbenkian PhD Programme in Biology and Medicine (PGDBM) in 1995. Ana developed her PhD studies at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies (La Jolla, USA) under the supervision of Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte (world-renowned stem cell scientist), and presented her thesis at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa in 2001. Ana conducted her postdoctoral studies at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (Oeiras, Portugal). In 2009, Ana was granted a five-year Research Scientist position (FCT Ciencia 2007 program) at Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária (Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal) to integrate the Vascular Development laboratory. In 2015, Ana became a Senior Investigator at the Tissue Repair and Inflammation group led by António Jacinto at NOVA Medical School (NMS, UNL, Lisbon, Portugal), which is currently relocating to the NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology (NIMSB, UNL, Lisbon, Portugal). There, she will continue to lead an independent line of research focused on investigating the developmental origins of hematopoietic progenitor cells and pathological consequences of their malformation. Ana has 19 scientific publications (14 in peer-reviewed journals and five in conference proceedings), including six articles as first or co-first author and six articles as corresponding author. Three of these publications have been highlighted in commentary articles by top experts in the field (Nature 1998; Development 2007; BMC Dev Biol 2011). These scientific works include over 30 collaborators from Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Japan and the United States. Furthermore, she has presented her work in over 40 communications, 17 of which at international conferences. Since 2003, Ana has coordinated four FCT-funded Projects as Principal Investigator (over 450,000 euros), participated in nine other collaborative projects, and was recently awarded with a Research Grant from the Autism Research Institute ($20,000). In addition, she won six Salary Grants in highly competitive schemes: one PhD Fellowship (Gulbenkian PhD Programme), four Post-Doctoral Fellowships and one Research Contract (Ciencia2008). As scientific adviser, Ana has supervised one Post-Doctoral Fellow, one PhD student (ongoing), six Master students (one ongoing) and six undergraduate students and research technicians. In addition, she has been principal examiner of five PhD and two Master thesis dissertations, and tutor of five PhD students (Thesis Committee member). Ana Tavares has peer reviewed for FEBS Journal, International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience and Molecular Biology Reports. Ana also participated in the conception and organization of two very successful international workshops on Biophysical Mechanisms of Development (2009 and 2011), the latter of which was supported by an EMBO grant (30,000 euros). As board member of the Portuguese Society for Developmental Biology (www.spbd.pt), Ana was responsible for organizing six 'Development in Action' meetings and symposia in 2018 and 2019, including the "DevBioMed Symposium - from Developmental Biology to Medicine and back" at the Champalimaud Foundation. Since 2011, Ana Teresa Tavares has been teaching undergraduate students as invited Lecturer and Chair of Developmental Biology at ISPA - Instituto Universitário (Lisbon, Portugal) and postgraduate students at NMS, FCUL and IGC Master and PhD programmes (Lisbon, Portugal).
