Patrício Costa holds a degree in Applied Mathematics (Statistics and Operations Research) and postgraduate training in Statistics and Information Management, complemented by an MSc in Modelling, Data Analysis and Decision Support Systems. He obtained a PhD in Contemporary Political Processes and later completed his Habilitation in Health Sciences. He previously served as an Associate Professor and Vice President for Management and Planning at the School of Medicine of the University of Minho. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP), where he teaches Research Methodology, Data Analysis, and Statistics, with a particular focus on the health and social sciences. Alongside his academic career, Patrício Costa maintains a strong connection with applied research and data analytics. He works as a Senior Statistician at Mediaprobe and has been closely involved in the development and implementation of survey methodologies and opinion polling systems at DOMP, S.A., contributing to major public opinion and electoral studies in Portugal. His research focuses on the development and application of quantitative methods in the social and health sciences, particularly survey methodology, political behaviour, ageing and health, and psychosocial processes. He currently serves as Country Team Leader for Portugal in the SHARE-ERIC infrastructure (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe), one of the largest European longitudinal research infrastructures on ageing. Through this role, he coordinates the Portuguese participation in the project, contributing to the production of internationally comparable data used widely in research and policy analysis on ageing. Patrício Costa has coordinated several research projects, including projects funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, addressing topics such as youth political participation, electoral behaviour, and the influence of leader traits and campaign tone on voting behaviour. He has also been involved in initiatives related to evidence-informed policymaking (EIPM, JRC), contributing to projects aimed at strengthening the integration of scientific evidence into public decision-making processes. In addition, he has collaborated in projects funded by Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos (FFMS) and multiple FCT-funded research initiatives. His scientific work combines advanced statistical modelling, psychometrics, survey research, and data science, applied across interdisciplinary domains. He has extensive experience with large-scale datasets, experimental designs, multivariate statistical modelling, and machine learning approaches in both social and health research contexts. Patrício Costa has authored more than 200 scientific publications indexed in international databases, accumulating over 4,000 citations and an h-index above 35 across major bibliometric platforms. His research has been published in numerous international peer-reviewed journals across fields such as psychology, medicine, education, and political science. Committed to research training and capacity building, Patrício Costa has supervised numerous doctoral and master’s students, contributing to the development of new researchers in quantitative methods, political behaviour, health research, and social data science. His interdisciplinary research interests include political participation and voting behaviour, ageing and health, education, marketing and consumer behaviour, empathy and psychosocial processes, with a particular emphasis on the application of advanced quantitative methods, survey research, and machine learning techniques to complex social phenomena.
