António José Ferreira da Silva

Geoscientist with a wide-ranging expertise in geomaterials, geological resources, mining engineering, engineering geology, petrology, geochemistry, geometallurgy and hydrometallurgy. Highly skilled in both technical and operational consultancy activities comprising the planning, elaboration and management of R&DT and R&DI projects related to the extraction/mining, beneficiation, quality and testing, eco-efficient recovery and refining of Li-bearing minerals, natural stone and other critical and ceramics raw materials on a circular economy basis. Experienced in business development, Environmental Impact Assessment studies, licensing and permitting, waste management solutions, ESG strategy and process engineering analysis of vertically integrated industrial projects, mostly on the upstream of the Li-ion batteries value chain and premium ceramics towards the production of both battery-grade Li chemicals and secondary raw materials powered by a renewable energy sourcing. Graduated in Biology and Geology Teaching Education for Middle and Secondary Schools (University of Aveiro, 2008) and holding a master¿s degree in Geomaterials and Geological Resources (Universities of Aveiro and Porto, 2011). The 1st year of the masters was completed at the Federal University of Ceará (Fortaleza, Brazil), where he was engaged in a geological mapping, mineral prospecting and field exploration project coordinated by the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM). Later, over the years 2011 and 2012, earned 2 scholarships to join R&D projects related to marine geology (sediment mapping of the Portuguese continental shelf) and geomaterials and engineering geology (petrography, geochemistry and geotechnical characterization of aggregates for construction from relevant Portuguese quarries) at the Universities of Aveiro and Porto, respectively. He started to collaborate with the GeoBioTec R&D Unit (Aveiro, Portugal) in late 2012, and 5 years later concluded his Ph.D. in Geosciences which focused the petrology, geochemistry and geochronology of a granulite-facies migmatitic terrain located in NE Brazil (Universities of Aveiro and Porto, 2017). In this context, had the opportunity to get in touch with significant analytical methodologies in fundamental and applied Earth and Material sciences (petrography and ore microscopy, mineral chemistry by Scanning Electron Microscopy - SEM, X-Ray Diffraction - XRD and Electron Probe MicroAnalysis - EPMA, Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotope geochemistry and mineral processing/separation for U-Pb zircon geochronology) and also with advanced spatial analysis with Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.). In recent years (from late 2017 to mid 2020), he was involved as a Senior Geologist, Geometallurgist, R&D Coordinator of Lusorecursos (Lda./S.A., MRC Lda. and Portugal Lithium S.A.) in 2 different projects, one based in Montalegre (Vila Real, Portugal) and the other one in Vila Verde (Braga, Portugal) that respectively aim, the extraction, processing and refining of Li minerals (petalite and spodumene) plus concentration of Sn and Ta minerals hosted in LCT pegmatites, and also the mining of gold and silver associated to sheared hydrothermal quartz veins. From mid 2021, he is a Senior Consultant and Business Developer of CTCV - Technological Centre for Ceramics and Glass (Coimbra, Portugal) in both the Industrial Engineering and Innovation & Development units, mainly focusing on the characterization of critical mineral raw materials among other activities such as the development of ceramic raw materials exploration and R&D projects, cartography, data and spatial analysis, etc. More recently has completed a post-graduation in Ceramic Technology (CTCV-University of Aveiro, 2022). So far, he has published several articles in specialized journals and papers in events and scientific meetings proceedings.
