Helena Paula de Freitas Caldeira Araújo concluded her degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences by the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon in 1991/07 and her Ph.D. in Chemistry, specialty of Biochemistry, by the University of Madeira in 2003/11/17. She started her professional activity in 1991 as a Trainee Assistant and then as an Assistant at the University of Madeira, Department of Chemistry, and she did the training requirement of four years in a Clinical Laboratory, for the Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine postgraduate specialist degree. Presently she is an Assistant Professor of the Basic Cycle of Medical Integrated Master Degree at the University of Madeira, Faculty of Life Sciences, where she teaches Cellular Biochemistry and Pharmacology in Organic Systems and Neurosciences Modules. Moreover, she has been tutoring medical students in Experimental Biochemistry laboratory courses. She was the Course Director of the Basic Cycle of Masters Degree in Medicine from 2011 to 2015 and is the Coordinator of this Cycle at the University of Madeira since 2013. She is a Senior Researcher at Centro de Química da Madeira and collaborates with the Research Institute for Medicines, University of Lisbon (iMed.UL). She started her research in the area of Inherited Metabolic Diseases to obtain a Ph.D. degree. A new HPLC method to analyse pyrimidines, purines, and their relation to the one-carbon metabolism was developed in order to screen a population with a severe mental handicap, after the establishment of reference values in a healthy population. As part of the previous study, creatinine metabolism was also evaluated and enabled to identify several patients with guanidinoacetate methyltransferase (GAMT) deficiency. A broader study of GAMT was undertaken and implications with homocysteine metabolism and the methylation cycle were studied. Furthermore, S-adenosylmethionine, S-adenosylhomocysteine, and related metabolites were evaluated and hyperornithinaemia patients were used as models for these biochemical changes. Her current research interests have focused on studying the homocysteine metabolism, using in vitro models, to understand the mechanisms underlying hyperhomocysteinemia pathogenicity in diseases such as cardiovascular and cancer. She has also been collaborating on several projects, with her expertise in clinical biochemistry and biochemical techniques, aiming to understand infectious diseases like Dengue and Zyka.
