Marta M. Alves is an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Department of Chemical Engineering, and a researcher at Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE) within the Associação do Instituto Superior Técnico para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento (IST-ID). Her research centres on biofunctional materials designed to advance sustainability and the clean-energy transition, leveraging a cross-disciplinary trajectory that integrates plant sciences with materials science and chemistry. Within the department, Marta teaches courses in process engineering, aligning her teaching with core topics that underpin sustainable chemical-engineering practice. She has over 60 peer-reviewed publications and has been invited to serve as a regular, managing, and guest editor for journals from renowned publishers. She frequently sits on international juries for research projects and doctoral/master’s theses, supervises graduate work, and hosts short-term fellows, strengthening collaborations in Portugal and abroad. Furthermore, she has taken part in national and international projects, was interviewed for the ERC Consolidator Grant, and was awarded a competitive CEEC contract.
