Paula Quitério graduated in Biochemistry and Food Chemistry, in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Aveiro, in 2005. After academic training, she worked mainly in laboratory and industrial areas, in Quality control, Occupational Health and Safety management systems and also in research in the Environmental area. In 2012, she completed the Master Degree in Analytical Chemistry, also at the University of Aveiro. Since then and until 2015, she has been working at IFIMUP research unit, Faculty of Sciences - University of Porto, under several research projects, in the synthesis and characterization of advanced materials, particularly self-assembled nanostructures of Ti, Al, Fe and Hf metal oxides, obtained by electrochemical anodization and electrodeposition techniques, also combined with lithographic techniques. In 2015, she started the PhD within the MAP-fis doctoral program, in the production, optimization, and characterization of semiconductor photoelectrodes based on environmentally friendly nanostructured materials [hematite (alpha-Fe2O3), tungsten trioxide (WO3), and titanium dioxide (TiO2)], for solar energy harvesting – photoelectrochemical (PEC) Cells for water splitting. Her domain of specialization is in the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured semiconductor materials, namely nanotubes, nanowires, and nanoplates of alpha-Fe2O3, WO3, and TiO2, produced by bottom-up and top-down techniques: physical vapor deposition, electrochemical anodization, electrodeposition and hydrothermal method. To highlight during the PhD the development of solid scientific skills (both analytical and experimental), working with specific techniques to perform morphological, structural, magnetic, optical, and photoelectrochemical characterization: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM/STEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Bragg Brentano and parallel beam with grazing incidence angles configurations, Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS), X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) including XANES and EXAFS (performed at LNLS - Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory), SQUID magnetometry, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and determination of photocurrent density using a solar simulator. Due to the multidisciplinary background in several areas, mainly in the analysis of several physical, chemical, electrochemical and microbiological parameters, she developed strong technical skills, being also an autonomous user of several types of advanced equipment.
