Hugo Magalhães is a Railway Researcher with 13 years of experience in Research and Development for the railway industry. With a background in Mechanical Engineering, he has focused on developing computational tools to investigate the dynamics of railway vehicles and pantographs, as well as their interaction with infrastructure under real operating conditions. His work aims to optimize current railway systems and foster innovation within this field. Since 2011, the candidate has been involved in three national research projects in close collaboration with the rail industry: SMARTRACK (budget: €165k), WEARWHEEL (€133k), and VOUGA (€37k), all conducted at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). These projects contributed to his MSc (2013) and PhD (2019) in Mechanical Engineering. During his PhD, he was a visiting scholar with the railway research group at the Polytechnic University of Milan (POLIMI). After completing his PhD, he joined the Institute of Railway Research (IRR) at the University of Huddersfield (UoH) as a Research Fellow, working on European projects such as S2R-NextGear (€2.6M), S2R-In2Track2 (€29M), S2R-PantOCL (€700k), and the EPSRC project Track2Future (£5.2M), alongside other industry consultancy projects. In 2022, he returned to IST as a Post-doctoral Researcher, contributing to national R&D projects like CENTAVO (€463k) and SMARTWAGONS (€75M). Also in 2022, he also began his role as an Invited Assistant Professor, starting his teaching career. In 2023, he began his industry career at MainRail as a Principal Industrial Researcher, where he was able to apply and further develop his research expertise in the railway sector. Throughout his career, the candidate has collaborated with research groups and railway industries across Portugal, Italy, the UK, and Spain. He has published 19 papers in reputable, peer-reviewed international journals, accumulating over 400 citations and achieving an h-index of 12 according to SCOPUS. He has successfully supervised 4 MSc theses at IST and 1 PhD thesis at the University of Huddersfield. Currently, he supervises 2 MSc theses and 1 PhD thesis at IST. Since 2021, he has served on the jury for 7 MSc and 4 PhD theses. Since 2021, the candidate integrated jury committees for 7 MSc and 4 PhD theses. Since 2020, the candidate has been invited to be part of the Editorial Board of the 5th and 6th International Conference on Railway Technology and the 2nd National Conference on Multibody Dynamics. In 2023, he co-chaired the 11th ECCOMAS Thematic Conference on Multibody Dynamics and co-edited the conference’s special issue. In 2022, he became an Associate Editor for Mechanism and Machine Theory and Guest Editor for a special issue on Railway Vehicles and Infrastructure. Since 2015, he performed 89 peer revisions for 21 international journals, further illustrating the merit and international recognition of his work.
