Hugo David is a biomedical researcher with wide-ranging expertise in molecular biology, in vitro models and medical biotechnology. In 2021, he graduated from the University of Porto, with a 17/20 grade point average (an A on the ECTS scale) in Biochemistry, moving on to a Master’s Degree in Cell and Molecular Biology, from the same university, which he finished with a 19/20 grade point average (an A on the ECTS scale) in 2023, after successfully defending his thesis on “Molecular and Functional Studies on Niemann-Pick type C Disease”, which was graded 20/20. Hugo is currently enrolled in the Biomedical Sciences PhD Programme, at the University of Porto. He has amounted over 2 years of experience in the scientific research field. First, as Bachelor’s student at the Immunogenetics Lab, at the ICBAS School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, where he stayed for 6 months while developing a project aiming to identify inflammatory microRNAs as exacerbation biomarkers in Multiple Sclerosis. During the last year of his Master’s Degree, he was hired as a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge, where he joined the Research and Development Unit of the Human Genetics Department. For one year, Hugo worked on the establishment of new in vitro models to study a rare lysosomal storage disorder and on identifying and validating novel biomarkers of disease through next generation sequencing. After that, Hugo joined the MitoNeuro Lab at the Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit (UCIBIO-REQUIMTE) as a Research Fellow in an FCT-funded project aimed at exploring mitophagy to rescue neurological syndromes in mitochondrial diseases, where he stayed for 5 months. At the moment, Hugo is a part of the Bioengineered 3D Microenvironments research group at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), and the Copenhagen Center for Glycomics, where his focus is the engineering of microcirculation-on-chip models to study lymphatic vessel function. Throughout his career, Hugo has co-authored 5 articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, 12 oral communications and 8 poster presentations at scientific conferences – 4 of which were awarded prizes, and 4 of which were delivered at international events. Besides that, he has peer-reviewed 1 article for the Nature Publishing Group, mentored 3 students of different nationalities in the lab, helped secure over 85k € in funding, co-organized research seminars and conferences, designed flyers to promote project outreach and participated in numerous workshops, seminars and symposiums, actively participating both in the creation and dissemination of Science.
