Nuno Miguel da Rocha Guimarães obtained his degree in Biochemistry in 2004, at the Faculty of Sciences of University of Lisbon. In 2006, he won a PhD grant from the Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT), with the work entitled “On the routes of Helicobacter pylori transmission among the humans”, being supervised by Dr. Maria João Vieira from University of Minho and Dr. Céu Figueiredo from Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP). In 2011, he completed his PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering. He was a Pos-Doctoral Researcher at LEPABE from January of 2012 until December 2017, after being selected in an extremely competitive national contest from FCT (with a remark of 4.72/5.00) with a project entitled “Anti-bacterial DNA mimics as a novel technique for Helicobacter pylori treatment”. His research has been mainly focused on the design and synthesis of nucleic acid mimics (NAMs) oligonucleotides for detection and/or growth inhibition of microorganisms, and their application in conditions mimicking the human body. He spent 2 months in Southern Denmark University working under supervision of Dr. Jesper Wengel, the inventor of LNA and 2’Ome nucleic acid mimics, where he improved his skills and knowledge on the design and synthesis of oligonucleotides using these 2 NAMs. At LEPABE, he was involved in the initial works regarding the optimization and adaptation of the FISH method in order to work against different bacteria in conditions similar to the human body. More recently, together with the previous research topic, his research strategy also includes the development of delivery mechanisms of this nucleic acids into the microorganisms. Currently, he is a Doctoral Researcher at LEPABE since June of 2018. From the point of view of the research activity, he has authored or co-authored 21 scientific papers in international journals indexed by Science Citation Index or Scopus, with 318 citations (H-index of 10). He has also published 5 book chapters and several abstracts in international conference proceedings. His work has been presented in several national and international conferences. He was also co-author of one national and one international patents. He participated in different competitive national and international research projects as EVK1-CT-2002-00108, SAFER - Surveillance and control of microbiological stability in drinking water distribution networks; PTDC/BIA-MIC/108811/2008, HELIWATER - Water and associated biofilms as a possible vector for Helicobacter pylori transmission among the human population; PTDC/DTP-PIC/4562/2014|16678, “Development of a novel color-coded RING FISH method: an innovative tool for the detection of antibiotic resistant clinical pathogens”, “uFISH - Integration of fluorescence in situ hybridization with microfluidics for the quasi real-time detection of food pathogens”, “ColorISH - Development of a new colorimetric method for the rapid detection of Legionella spp. in water sources”, "NanoSAURUS - Nanotech-double functionalized particles to transport Nucleic Acid Mimics against Staphylococcus Aureus" and "NAMSal - Nucleic acid mimics as a new tool against salmonellosis in the poultry industry" all founded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. He also participate in the project obtained through an international call, H2020-WIDESPREAD-2016-2017, Strengthening the Research Area of Delivery of Nucleic acid mimics (NAMS) into bacteria to fight the antibiotic crisis. In his curriculum, Nuno Guimarães has also co-supervised 1 MSc thesis and has been co-advisor in 3 PhD thesis, 1 MSc thesis and 5 end of course Erasmus projects, and has been invited as external evaluator of 2 Master thesis. He has also participated in the organization of national and international scientific meetings and workshops. Since 2016, he has been teaching at FEUP in the Integrated Master in Bioengineering (MIB), which has been awarded by the international EUR.
