Dr. Cardoso is a renowned researcher in the field of tourism, with a particular focus on the intersection of neuroscience, technology, and tourism management. She earned her PhD in Tourism Management and Planning from the University of Vigo in 2010, after defending her thesis titled "Image of the Portuguese Tourist Destination in Spain." Her research utilized experimental methods to explore the influence of promotional sources on destination image, integrating principles from cognitive psychology and behavioral sociology. She has an extensive teaching background, having lectured on undergraduate and master's level tourism courses, while supervising internships and dissertations. Currently, she mentors three doctoral students, two in tourism management (at the Universities of Coimbra and Aveiro) and one in applied neuroscience to tourism (at the University of Coimbra). Her involvement extends to serving as a jury member for doctoral defenses and specialization programs. Dr. Cardoso has made significant contributions to the field of tourism research, with several publications in top-tier journals. Her recent work focuses on the application of neuroscience and computing to tourism, exploring areas like perception, memory, creativity, and decision-making in tourism communication. One of her key achievements is the development of DB-Gnosis, a software tool used for bibliometric analysis and research performance evaluation. Since 2022, Dr. Cardoso has been an integrated researcher at CiTUR Leiria, where she leads the neuroscience applied to tourism research line. In 2024, she published her seminal paper, "Demystifying Neurotourism," in the European Journal of Tourism Research, introducing the concept of Neurotourism and structuring it through an interdisciplinary approach. As part of her vision for advancing neurotourism research, she proposed and helped establish the NeuroLaboratory at CiTUR Leiria, which provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for neuroscience-based studies in tourism. A recognized leader in the field, she serves as the secretary of the Swiss Chapter of the International Federation for Information Technology and Travel & Tourism (IFITT), a role she has held since 2019. She is also an editor for special issues in high-impact journals and a frequent guest reviewer. Dr. Cardoso has chaired sessions at prominent international conferences, including DSOTT’2025 and the World Leisure Congress 2025. Her contributions to the scientific community have been acknowledged with multiple awards, such as the "Outstanding Reviewer" and "Best Presentation Award" at international conferences. In 2025, she will be a keynote speaker at the 6th Marrakech International Tourism Conference, presenting the challenges of applying neuroscientific methods to tourism research. Dr. Cardoso's interdisciplinary approach has also led to numerous international collaborations. In particular, in the field of neurotourism, she has worked with renowned institutions such as the University of Breda (Netherlands), and the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (Brazil), among others.
