Mário Costa é Professor Catedrático no Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica do Instituto Superior Técnico. É licenciado em Engenharia Química (1984) pela Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra, Doutorado em Engenharia Mecânica (1992) pelo Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine da Universidade de Londres e Agregado em Engenharia Mecânica (2009) pelo Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade de Lisboa. Lecciona desde 1992, especialmente as disciplinas de Termodinâmica, Combustão, Gestão de Energia e Sistemas Integrados de Energia, e orientou 8 pós-doutoramentos, 18 teses de doutoramento, 75 teses de mestrado e 35 projectos de fim de curso. O seu trabalho de investigação tem-se centrado no domínio da combustão, em particular na combustão de combustíveis gasosos, líquidos e sólidos, incluindo biomassa, e formação e emissão de poluentes. Participou em cerca de 50 projectos europeus e nacionais, essencialmente nas áreas da Energia e Ambiente. Tem mais de 140 artigos científicos publicados em revistas internacionais, mais de 180 comunicações em conferências internacionais e mais de 40 lições convidadas noutras universidades e em conferências internacionais. Actualmente e Editor Associado do Proceedings of the Combustion Institute e pertence ao Conselho Editorial das revistas Aerospace, Combustion and Flame, Energy Conversion and Management, Energies e Energy and Fuels. Recebeu cinco prémios científicos (Caleb Brett Award, 1991; Sugden Award, 1991; Prémio Científico Universidade Técnica de Lisboa/Santander Totta, 2010; Menção Honrosa Universidade de Lisboa/Santander Universidades, 2016; Prémio Científico Universidade de Lisboa/Santander Universidades, 2017) relativos à sua actividade de investigação na área da Engenharia Mecânica. Em 2020 foi eleito Fellow of the Combustion Institute "for innovative research on solid fuel combustion, formation and control of pollutants, and mild combustion".
