Pedro Dinis is a trainee at the Forensic Chemistry and Toxicological Service of the Centre Branch (SQTFC) of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (INMLCF, I.P.). With regards to his academic background, he has completed bachelor's and master’s degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra. During these five years, he had the opportunity to participate in a five-month mobility program ERASMUS+ in Hungary, in a small city called Debrecen, where he gained valuable cultural experience and developed skills for adapting to adversity. In 2021, he participated in a volunteer scheme organized by the clinical analysis laboratory of the University of Coimbra. This volunteering involved conducting COVID-19 tests within the academic community of the University of Coimbra, including students, teachers, and non-teaching staff. In terms of social and political activities, during his academic career, he was involved in the Portuguese Association of Pharmacy Students (APEF) as a Fiscal Council Rapporteur, and in the Pharmacy Students Group of the Academic Association of Coimbra (NEF/AAC) as the Vice-President of the Plenary. These positions allowed him to develop his communication skills and critical thinking abilities. Regarding his professional experience, in 2021 he completed a summer internship in the Pharmaceutical Services of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (CHUC), where he rotated through various departments and updated medication repackaging protocols. Between January and April 2023, he interned at a pharmacy, Farmácia São Miguel, where he enhanced his knowledge of medications by managing orders and logistics, as well as providing pharmaceutical care and counselling. In May 2023, he began his internship at SQTFC as a student intern, where he shadowed professionals from different teams and conducted immunoassay screening for drugs of abuse and benzodiazepines. Furthermore, he extended his internship for an additional three months to complete ongoing experimental work. During this time, he submitted an article and completed three projects: an oral presentation titled "Viability of Bile as an Alternative Matrix for Classic Drugs of Abuse Analysis by Immunoassays" and a poster titled "Bile as an Alternative or Complementary Matrix in the Analysis of Drugs of Abuse and Benzodiazepines by Immunoassays: A Preliminary Study," both presented at the XXI National Congress of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, October 2023; and a flash presentation titled "Development of a GC-MS Method for the Confirmation of Opiates in Bile following Immunoassay Screening" at the XIII National Chromatography Meeting, December 2023. Furthermore, due to his contributions and interest in the laboratory, he was invited to continue his work at SQTFC through a voluntary internship, assisting in the implementation of an ongoing analytical method. This voluntary internship allowed him to acquire skills in method validation according to international standards, the development and implementation of new analytical methods, become familiar with the routine and day-to-day operations of a forensic toxicology laboratory, sense of responsibility and organization, and expand his interest in this area to the point of deciding that this will be his area of focus in the future. Moreover, he was able to publish an article titled “a-Pyrrolidinohexanophenone (a-PHP) and a-Pyrrolidinoisohexanophenone (a-PiHP): A Review” which reviews the two most prevalent synthetic cathinones in cases of death in Portugal.
