Ana Sousa is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology and at CESAM – Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, University of Aveiro (Portugal), and was an Assistant Researcher (CEEC-FCT) at the same institution (2019–2025). She holds a BSc in Biology (2003) and a MSc in Ecology (2005) from the University of Coimbra, and a PhD in Biology (Ecology) (2010) from the University of Lisbon. Her career has focused on the functioning and resilience of coastal wetlands under multiple pressures, including climate change, with particular emphasis on the resilience and restoration of coastal wetlands (seagrass meadows and salt marshes), as well as their spatio-temporal dynamics and ecosystem services provided (e.g., climate regulation, blue carbon storage). She has also specialized in conservation and management through a transdisciplinary approach to address scientific and societal challenges using participatory methods (e.g., the BioPradaRia project (MAR2020/EMFF, 2018–2022), which she coordinated). She coordinates the BLUE-REWET project (FCT/COMPETE2030, 2025–2028) and leads at Institutional level (UAveiro), the projects REWRITE (Horizon Europe), CAPTA (Interreg POCTEP), and GLOW (Griffith University, Australia). She is also actively involved in the projects Life SeagrassRiaWild (LIFE+), A-AAgora (Horizon Europe) and RESTORE4Cs (Horizon Europe, finished). She has participated in more than 30 R&D projects (7 as Principal Investigator, either at project or institutional level), including collaborations with the private sector (e.g., SEAREST-BC/PRIO), and in international scientific networks for research and long-term monitoring (e.g., eLTER-PT and Europe, PORBIOTA). Between 2020 and 2022, she was Co-Bioregional Leader for Seagrass of the IUCN SSC Seagrass Specialist Group & Red List Authority. She collaborates regularly with national authorities (ICNF, DGRM) and is actively involved in science communication activities.
