Nuna Gabriela Lima da Costa holds an Integrated Master’s degree in Textile Engineering and is currently completing her PhD in Textile Engineering at the University of Minho (UM), supported by an FCT fellowship in a non-academic environment. Her PhD research is developed at the 2C2T – Centre for Textile Science and Technology, in collaboration with the COPO Group, including Copo Têxtil Portugal and CETEC, and focuses on the development of textile-based electrochemical sensing technologies for alcohol detection, with the aim of integrating these systems into vehicles to support the prevention of alcohol-impaired driving. Her expertise includes electrochemical biosensors, smart textiles, printed electronics, screen printing, ink formulation and characterization, nanomaterials, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), surface modification, and physicochemical characterization. Her research experience encompasses the development, optimization, and analytical validation of sensors for the analysis of complex matrices, including calibration, sensitivity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), and selectivity. She has expertise in voltammetry, amperometry, potentiometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), as well as in material and surface characterization techniques including SEM, profilometry, TGA/DTG, DSC, FTIR, and GC-SPME. Her experience also includes textile characterization, surface wettability, contact angle, moisture management, water and water-vapor permeability, mechanical and friction testing, and electrical characterization of conductive textile substrates. Her professional experience spans both academic and industrial environments, including R&D activities with textile and automotive-related companies, with a strong focus on translating scientific knowledge into technological applications. In 2026, she was awarded funding as Principal Investigator of BiosenTex4Auto, a UI-Transfer 2.0 proof-of-concept project directly related to her PhD research topic and focused on the transfer of the developed scientific and technological knowledge towards market-oriented applications. She is first author of 4 peer-reviewed scientific articles published in international journals and has presented her research at 5 international conferences. She is also co-inventor of 1 patent application related to her PhD research. Participated in 3 scientific seminars, contributing to discussions on advanced materials and textile sensor technologies. Participated in scientific outreach activities involving laboratory demonstrations, research equipment, and ongoing projects for school students, promoting awareness of scientific research and technological innovation. Her research interests include textile engineering, materials engineering, printed electronics, electrochemical (bio)sensing, smart textiles, analytical validation, functional materials, and textile-based sensing technologies.
