Manuel Simões is graduated in Biological Engineering and received a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering. Currently,
he is Associate Professor with Habilitation, Pro-Director of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP,
between 2018 and 2022), and member of the Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy (LEPABE)
in the Department of Chemical Engineering at FEUP. During the last years, he has been involved in 15 national projects (5
as principal investigator) and 10 European projects. He was a member of the management committee of the Cost action BACFOODNET
(A European Network for Mitigating Bacterial Colonisation and Persistence on Foods and Food Processing Environments) and is
involved in two other actions: iPROMEDAI and MUTALIG. He is a management committee member of PlasTHER COST Action. Manuel
Simões has more than 200 papers published in journals indexed in JCR, 4 books (1 as author and 3 as editor) and more than
42 book chapters. He is Deputy Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Applied Microbiology, Section Editor-in-Chief for Antibiotics
journal, Assistant Editor for Biofouling: The Journal of Bioadhesion and Biofilm Research (the oldest journal on biofilm research)
and Associate Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology journal. His main research interests are focused on the mechanisms of biofilm
formation and their control with antimicrobial agents, particularly using new antimicrobial molecules.
Since 2020 he has been among the restricted number of Portuguese researchers recognized by the Web of Science/Clarivate Analytics
as a highly cited researcher, recognizing the exceptional research influence demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited
papers.
