Bárbara Santos is a researcher at CNC-UC, where her work focuses on the identification of peripheral biomarkers for the early diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). She holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Coimbra (2026). Bárbara has been awarded four research fellowships within the projects SleepApnea ID, NoOSAnoAGEING, and HealthyAging2020, and a doctoral fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Her research integrates molecular biology, clinical investigation, and translational approaches to study sleep disorders, including OSA, insomnia, and rare neurodegenerative sleep conditions. She is also involved in the development of ApneaScreener, an innovative blood-based diagnostic algorithm for OSA screening and monitoring that is currently in advanced stages of intellectual property preparation. She is co-author of five scientific and science communication publications and has presented her work widely, with 37 oral and 49 poster presentations at national and international conferences. She has received four individual scientific awards and contributed to 25 team distinctions, reflecting her active role in collaborative research and scientific excellence. Bárbara is a member of the EIT Health @Ageing PhD School, where she receives advanced multidisciplinary and innovation training. She has also completed several entrepreneurship and innovation programs, including From Knowledge to Market – Tech-Intensive Entrepreneurship, Académica Start UC (Ambassador), SheLeads (Best Pitch Award), BiotechSTARS (Best Pitch Award), and Acelera@UC, strengthening her skills in innovation, business strategy, and scientific pitching. Beyond research, she is actively engaged in academic leadership and outreach. She participates in science communication initiatives such as SNEV, PubHD Coimbra, represents doctoral students within CIBB and NEDUC, contributes to sustainability initiatives through the Green Labs team, and has volunteered in public health efforts including SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic testing. Her scientific interests center on sleep biology, aging, extracellular vesicles, and biomarker discovery, with the goal of advancing precision diagnostics and improving clinical management of sleep disorders.
