Maria João Jacinto is the Executive Director of Patient Innovation and doctoral researcher at Nova School of Business and Economics with focus on 'Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Impact: Creating a Resilient, Safe and Crowd-based Innovation System'. Maria João Jacinto received her Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering framed in MIT Portugal program, and her MSc in Biological Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. Maria João Jacinto has a strong background in Engineering and Technology sciences, namely in biotechnology process through downstream processing, microfluidic and detection techniques. Maria João had different international collaboration and research experiences as her master thesis in University of Ghent, in European bioengineering research projects and part of her PhD thesis in University of Houston, Texas, USA. After finishing her PhD, Maria João worked for almost one year leading an innovative bionanotechnology research project at Biotrend, when she decided to connect the Medical Engineering and Biotechnology with the end-users input to assure the answer to real unmet needs. She thus started as a junior postdoctoral contracted at Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics with focus on 'Revolutionising Healthcare: Empowering patients by valuing innovation and promoting entrepreneurship'. Currently, Maria João's research is focused on user innovation in healthcare, namely the patient innovation phenomenon, related to the international Patient Innovation project, by increasing the number and quality of the solutions developed by patients that are published in the online platform with medical supervision, as well as to promote contact with innovators and support them in various areas, as bringing and scaling-up their solutions into the market. With this is mind, she designed and continues to lead the Patient Innovation Bootcamp, an activity to directly support patients and caregivers in the technically improvement of their solutions and find a set of resources needed to market them so that more people can benefit from them. This activity has been sponsored by EIT Health for 3 years now and it is promoted by prestigious European Universities (Copenhagen Business School, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, IESE, University of Copenhagen, Technical University of Denmark), Biocat and Glintt. Her 'hands-on' experience on applied healthcare science provide her the opportunity to contribute in several and connected teaching modules in different schools, either as teaching assistant, invited lecture or responsible teacher. It is Maria João's intention to develop the scientific knowledge in the field of Health Innovation and Innovation with and by patients. A pilot of solutions co-created with patients will help to assess usability and cost-effectiveness of Medical Engineering and Biotechnology solutions, to better understand the critical resources required to answer to relevant society challenges.
