Bruna Filipe Ramos Cardoso da Silva completed her bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy in 2022 (4 years – 240 ECTS) at the Polytechnic of Leiria, with a final grade of 17 out of 20. During her academic journey, she developed a strong interest in biomechanics, from cellular aspects to in vivo applications. Her final internship was carried out at the Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP) of the Polytechnic of Leiria, where she began her research in motion analysis. In her early years as a researcher at CDRSP, she worked on biomechanical analysis using Kinovea, Qualisys, and Visual 3D, focusing on ovine gait studies and assisting in the design of scaffolds for these experiments. This led to her first lead-author publication: “Biomechanical Gait Analysis in Sheep – Kinematic Parameters”, published in 2024 in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (Q1). She also contributed to the Human Movement Studies course in the Physiotherapy degree by sharing her expertise in Kinovea. Until recently, Bruna was a research fellow in the project “Optimization of stimuli in bi-tissue scaffolds: from mathematical and computational modeling to experimental validation” (PTDC/EME-SIS/4446/2020), which has now concluded. Through this project, she developed skills in mathematical and computational methods and deepened her study of the mechanical behavior of osteochondral tissue, particularly through the development of constitutive models for bioengineered structures. This research led to the publication of the article “Toward Integrative Biomechanical Models of Osteochondral Tissues: A Multilayered Perspective” in Bioengineering (MDPI). In parallel, she has collaborated with ICBAS in studies on ovine gait adaptations following sciatic nerve injury, contributing to preclinical biomechanical assessments. This resulted in an oral presentation at the 30th Congress of the European Society of Biomechanics (“Biomechanical Adaptations in Sheep's Gait Following End-To-End Neurorrhaphy for Nerve Regeneration”), nominated for the ON Award, and in the submission, as co-author, of the article “Combined use of Olfactory Mucosal Mesenchymal Stem Cells Secretome and Neural Guide Conduits Promotes Nerve Regeneration in an Ovine Model” to Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology. Bruna collaborated in the project ReinventO (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-040021) and is second author of the article “A Review on 3D Scanners Studies for Producing Customized Orthoses.” She also worked on the projects Bone2Move (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-031146), C-Orthopedics (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-039754), and O Jogo como um recurso terapêutico na abordagem à dor crónica em pessoas adultas e idosas. She has also taken part in international scientific training activities, such as a Winter School in Maastricht, with exclusive access to the renowned MERLN Institute’s advanced laboratories, and an Easter School on additive manufacturing entitled “Introduction to Modelling of Materials Processing and Behavior in OpenFOAM”, held during Materials 2022. In 2023, she presented her research at the National Biomechanics Congress, with the oral communication “Sheep Hindlimb Kinematic Parameters for Biomechanics Assessment.” Within the scope of the European project PREDICTOS, she helped organize the Thematic Workshop “Advanced Strategies for In Vitro and In Vivo Osteosarcoma Models – Translating Research to Clinical Practice” and participated in a network event that included a visit to the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine.
