Back in 2013, I had the chance to integrate the Lab.Neuropsychophysiology (U.Porto) to conduct my master's studies on the etiology of psychopathy. It planted the seed for what came next. In the next years I was a research fellow and received extensive training in EEG. In 2017, I started my PhD – awarded by FCT – at the same lab. The research plan was an extension of what I have learned from psychopathy as applied to broader mental health phenomena: that disorders are highly comorbid and clinical profiles can be heterogeneous – so we need to rethink the way we search for their neurobiological markers. As this is not a one-woman job, I immediately embraced international efforts such as Research Domain Criteria and Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP). Overall, my research stems from a paradigm shift: the one-to-one association hypothesis, aiming to find unique biomarkers for each disorder, will not suffice to explain the complex structure of psychopathology and its association with neurobiological mechanisms. Thus, following emerging movements, I redirected my focus to more parsimonious hypotheses aspiring to identify transdiagnostic markers underlying the risk for multiple psychiatric disorders. For example, in the last 3 years, I was first author and collaborator of relevant work aiming: 1) to dissociate components of personality structure; 2) to characterize ERP modulation, starting from the basic building blocks of the psychopathological structure (e.g., symptom) and proceeding to its highest level of generality (i.e., latent factors); 3) to rethink how self-report data need to be cross-validated with other modalities of assessment (e.g., ERP indicators) to define unidimensional biobehavioral constructs; 4) to propose a new approach to increase phenotyping precision. My research on neurosciences is now translating into how we can develop empirically-informed psychological assessment procedures. Following the evidence, we are developing at the HiTOP consortium a tool that maps more than 100 clinical symptoms - which will likely improve access to healthcare systems and diagnostic accuracy. I’m articulating with several stakeholders and coordinating the team that is collecting normative data on HiTOP-SR so we can have (for free!) concrete referents to generate comprehensive clinical profiles and identify individuals at risk. This will further help to unveil cross-cutting mechanisms that explain comorbidity between disorders and increase disease burden; paving the path for defining intervention strategies operating to mitigate related clinical problems. At the end of my PhD, in 2021, I was invited to be an Auxiliary Professor at Lusófona University. Considering my expertise, I was assigned as a lecturer of courses in the interface between Psychology and Neurosciences. The Board also gave me the mission to develop a master’s degree in clinical Neuropsychology and to build the HEI-LAB’s facilities at Porto Campus. I’m now the director of that masters and head of the Brain.Edge – Clinical&Translational Neuroscience Lab. At this lab, I truly emphasize creating an environment that encourages a research culture based on transparency, open science, national and international collaboration, accountability, close communication, work-family balance, innovation and problem-solving, empowering students and researchers so they can take ownership of their projects and contribute with unique insights. Within a two-year time frame, this team was able to attract funding from national and international agencies for 8 research projects. Currently, I stand at top 0,13% of worldwide researchers in ERPs (#1 Portugal) and 0,92% in Personality Disorders. I published in several high-ranked journals. In recognition of my work as a young researcher, I received several distinctions from national and international institutes (e.g., Society for Psychophysiological Research, Open Science Framework, Society Personality Assessment)
