I obtained a BSc in Applied Chemistry - Biotechnology in 2000 from the School of Science and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon. In 2007, I obtained a European Label PhD in Biochemistry from the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) and NOVA University of Lisbon (Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, ITQB NOVA). Between 2007 and 2010, I was a Post-Doc at Stanford University School of Medicine (Microbiology and Immunology Department) and ITQB NOVA. In 2010 I integrated the Metabolism and Genetics Group at the Research Institute for Medicines, Lisbon University School of Pharmacy, as Auxiliary Investigator. In 2015 I joined the Structural Genomics Group, Macromolecular Crystallography Unit, ITQB NOVA as Auxiliary (FCT) Investigator. Since 2021 I lead the Applied Protein Biochemistry (APB) Lab, currently including 4 PhD students, 2 researchers, 4 Master students and 2 external PhD students. The current research lines of the APB Lab combine protein biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology to investigate and modulate protein function and structure in different biological contexts and for diverse applications: i) studying molecular mechanisms of human pathologies aiming at innovative diagnostics and therapeutics; and ii) designing and developing proteins as biotechnological tools. While the ABP Lab core activities are centered on protein biochemistry and biophysics, translation of our research is ensured through a network of National and International collaborators working on advanced cell and animal models, and having access to patient sample cohorts. I have published 61 peer-reviewed scientific articles (17 as (co-)first and 20 as (co-)corresponding author), 5 book chapters and 2 patents (1 international). Thus far, I have completed the co-supervision of 3 PhD and 11 Masters theses. Additionally, I have supervised the activities of a post-doc, various research fellows and undergraduate students, and hosted foreign PhD students for short (3-6 month) stays. I have been a member of the jury in 13 PhD and 12 Master theses, a member of 14 PhD thesis committees for PhD Students from different institutions, and have served as external referee for the written dissertations of PhD students of the Biochemistry Department, Sapienza University of Rome (Italy). Moreover, I frequently serve as a reviewer for scientific journals, from specialized journals mostly dedicated to molecular research in topics pertaining to biochemistry, pharmacology and physiology, to high impact journals such as Nature Communications and Antioxidants and Redox Signaling. I have reviewed National and International grant applications. I have been actively engaged into teaching. At the School of Pharmacy, I lectured in Biochemistry and in the Masters in Biopharmaceutical Sciences. In 2019 I became co-coordinator of the optional curricular unit (CU) Proteins in Disease Mechanisms and in 2023 co-coordinator of the CU Protein Biogenesis Folding and Structure, both from the MolBioS PhD program at ITQB NOVA. In addition, I lectured in other CUs in the program, in the Plants4Life PhD program (ITQB NOVA), and in the Advanced Research Methods Course at NOVA Medical School. Additionally, I lecture in Bioanalytical Processes, Masters in Biochemistry for Health, hosted by ITQB, FCT NOVA and NOVA Medical School. I have secured funding as PI of 8 research grants (total ~365 kEuro) and as participant/team member in LaCaixa Foundation (BioPlattar; 1 MEuro), EU HORIZON-HLTH-2023-DISEASE-03 (101137419; EvaMobs; 8 MEuro) and Twinning (857203; ImpaCT; 1 MEuro) grants. In addition to research and teaching activities, I am actively engaged into management duties at ITQB NOVA. In 2020-2023, I coordinated the ITQB NOVA Research Facilities. Since December 2022, I am a member of the ITQB NOVA Scientific Council and, since May 2023, a member of the IHMT-ITQB-IGC-NSL Ethics Committee.
