Gustavo Lopes dos Santos holds a PhD in Territorial Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (IST-UL) (2025), and an MSc in Civil Engineering specialising in Urbanism, Transport and Systems from the same institution (2015). His research focuses on the interrelationship between mega-events and cities, with particular attention to spatial planning, governance and sustainability in the planning, delivery and legacy of the Olympic Games. His doctoral research, developed at the Centre for Innovation in Territory, Urbanism and Architecture (CiTUA), examined the impacts of Olympic Agenda 2020 on contemporary Olympic planning processes, through forward-looking case studies of Paris 2024 and Milan–Cortina 2026. He was awarded the Olympic Studies Centre PhD Students and Early Career Academics Research Grant Programme of the International Olympic Committee, supporting international research stays and fieldwork. His research has resulted in peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, a book, and several conference participations. Beyond his doctoral research, he has actively contributed to interdisciplinary projects in spatial planning, transport, governance, biodiversity and nature-based solutions in CiTUA, CERIS and CENTEC, including BioValue, PLANN@T, CidadeportoTejo, CidadeTejo, Territorio.Justo.pt, and ShortSeaChain. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at CERIS-IST within the NBSPLUS project and an invited Professor in the course Fundamentals of Spatial Planning at IST.
