Ferreira got his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in Surface Engineering Specialization in the U. of Coimbra in March 2018. Part of his PhD was done at the highly prestigious Berkeley Lab., CA, USA. The thesis was considered to be deserving of praise and distinction by unanimity, resulting in 7 papers in SCOPUS-index journals. Although the candidate did not have a research scholarship by the FCT to develop his PhD work exclusively, he was awarded two times in a row (2015, 2016) by the North American Society of Vacuum Coaters as the best PhD student in the field, sponsoring the PhD thesis. Furthermore, the candidate achieved the first rank of FLAD foundation, winning a grant to proceed with part of his thesis in the USA. The candidate integrated different research projects at CEMMPRE research centre during his career. From 2013 to 2015, he was hired as a researcher of a competitive project with the reference PTDC/EME-TME/122116/2010, whose objective was the development of low friction coatings for tribological applications at high temperatures. In 2015, the researcher participated in the ORIEL project (PTDC/CTM-CER/118933/2010), which was focused on developing thin films for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. The researcher won a call to work at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility during this period. From 2016 to 2019, Fábio Ferreira worked on one European project (M-ERA-NET/0003/2015) and from 2019 to present in the HardRings project (PTDC/EME-APL/29122/2017). These projects' primary objective is to develop an innovative, cost-effective process to produce DLC coatings combining high hardness, low friction coefficient, and low roughness specifically tailored for application in piston rings of internal combustion engines. He was selected to participate and awarded with 2 e-cost ITC Conf. Grants (2019, 2020) and in 2019 a COST action (Critical Raw Material under Extreme Conditions - CA15102), networking instruments which allowed for extending his international collaboration. In 2020, Fábio Ferreira was projects reviewer for the National Innovation Agency (ANI – Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering panels). Since 2020, the candidate has been an Invited Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Coimbra, giving several courses. Additional, the candidate gave lectures related to thin films at the University of Minho. In 2021 the candidate won the first research project, the LubEnergy project (UTAP-EXPL/NPN/0046/2021), funded by the FCT. The candidate belongs to the Organizing Committees of the upcoming Int. Conf. on THIN-FILM Processing and Application to be held in India in March 2022 and the Junior EuroMat 2022 Conf. in Portugal in July 2022. He has been collaborating with researchers from the Berkeley Lab., U. of Texas, U. of Uppsala, Tokyo Metropolitan U., Czech Technical U., etc., which allows him to increase his skills in plasma analyses, advanced material characterization, lubrication, tribology, and simulation.
