Elvira Fatsini Fernández

Elvira Fatsini Fernández, PhD in Science and Technology in Animal Production (2017) from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, is a researcher at the Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) in Faro, Portugal. She has been a member of the aquaculture research group (AQUAGROUP) since 2018, in the specific research line of Reproductive Biotechnology. Dr Fatsini can demonstrate her qualifications as an independent researcher through publications related to reproduction, project leadership, participation in conferences and international collaborations. Dr Fatsini has published 20 articles in scientific journals (15 in the last 7 years), 9 of which she led and 13 in Q1 journals. She currently has 4 articles submitted pending decision in high-profile aquaculture journals. Her h-index is 10 (245 citations in total, an average of 37 per year since 2019). Dr Fatsini has been awarded 2 postdoctoral fellowships, 1 outstanding junior research contract and 3 competitive projects (2 international and 1 Portuguese National) as a principal investigator (PI). She was recently awarded a postdoctoral “Beatriu de Pinòs” contract at the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA) in Spain, starting in April 2025. During her post-doctoral period and early career as an independent researcher (7 years), she participated in 16 national and international projects. Dr Fatsini took part in 21 conferences, 3 national and 17 international, presenting a total of 27 oral communications and 25 posters. Dr Fatsini's collaboration extends across borders, as evidenced by her involvement in articles with institutions in 10 countries and a contract with two major fish farms, CUPIMAR and SEA EIGHT. She has been involved in the education of young scientists, co-supervising one PhD thesis (ongoing), supervising 4 master's theses, 4 bachelor's theses and several research internships for master's, doctoral students and research scientists. She has actively supervised 13 students in three different subjects of the Master's in Aquaculture and Fisheries, namely ‘Laboratory Methods’, ‘Field Methods’ and ‘Practical Work’. Dr Fatsini was invited to give practical lessons in the subject of ‘Animal and Plant Histology’ of official teaching (98 hours) at the University of the Algarve for undergraduate Biology students and seminars for students on the Master's degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries. In addition, her involvement in disseminating science to the public through outreach activities is also evidenced by 8 seminars in schools and high schools in Spain and Portugal, 9 seminars in universities, 2 participations in fairs and the organisation of 3 scientific workshops. Dr Fatsini managed AQUAGROUP's different social media channels (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and X) at CCMAR. Currently, she is the WP4 leader of dissemination and communication of the BLUEBOOST project. She is a reviewer for various peer-reviewed scientific journals, such as Aquaculture, Physiology and Behaviour, Scientific Reports, Aquaculture Reports, among others (39 reviews) and is on the editorial board of a Peruvian aquaculture journal (Peruvian Journal of Agricultural Research (REPIA)) and the journal for young scientists ‘Frontiers for Young Minds’. She has taken part in 1 PhD and 3 master's theses juries and 9 scientific committees to evaluate various fellowship positions at the University of the Algarve and CCMAR.
