Dominique Fernandes is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Synapse Biology group at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. She graduated in Biochemistry in 2009, (BSc, University of Porto) and in Cell and Molecular Biology, with a specialization in Neurobiology in 2011 (MSc, University of Coimbra). She concluded her PhD in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine in 2018, under the supervision of Prof. Ana Luísa Carvalho and Dr. Sandra Santos. During her PhD, carried at the University of Coimbra and the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, she studied the role of two cell-adhesion proteins, CASPR1 & CASPR2, in underlying key molecular mechanisms that regulate synaptic function in the context of homeostatic synaptic plasticity. She is now interested in exploring how neuronal homeostasis acts to maintain network stability in the brain, and in understanding whether these processes are likely targets for dysfunction in several neuropsychiatric disorders. She is also investigating the mechanisms elicited by CASPR2 autoantibodies that drive pathogenesis in autoimmune synaptic encephalitis. Dominique has published 3 papers (Q1, h-index 2, 78 citations in Scopus, 127 citations in GoogleScholar) and has three more manuscripts in preparation. She is actively participating in 5 different collaborative projects. She has presented her work in over 15 national and international conferences, having won awards for best presentation and multiple travel grants. Dominique often teaches classes, has officially supervised 5 MSc and BSc students, and over 15 students on laboratory rotations. She has participated in grant evaluation committees, contributed to manuscript peer-reviewing and has collaborated in the preparation of several grant proposals, having already submitted as PI. She has extensive expertise in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology techniques, including preparation of primary cultures of dissociated neurons, cloning and lentiviral production; widefield microscopy and data analysis; cell and acute slice electrophysiology; as well as animal surgery techniques and animal handling.
