Luísa Cortes is a Principal Investigator and the Coordinator of the Advanced Optical Microscopy Laboratory at the University of Coimbra, also serving as the Head of the MICC – Microscopy Imaging Center of Coimbra since 2007. With a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Coimbra and a Master’s in Biochemical Engineering from IST, her career has evolved from high-impact research in molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases to the strategic leadership of major scientific infrastructures. Currently, she is a Member of the General Council of the University of Coimbra, and she serves as the Coordinator of the Installation Committee of the CC-RNIE (Conselho Coordenador do Roteiro Nacional das Infraestruturas de Investigação de Interesse Estratégico) and the National Coordinator of the Portuguese Platform of Bioimaging (PPBI), a node of Euro-BioImaging-ERIC research infrastructure. Committed to advanced academic training, she is the Vice-Coordinator of the PDBEB – PhD Programme in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine and chairs the Training Working Group of the international Core Technologies for Life Sciences Association (CTLS). An accomplished scientist with over 43 original publications and an H-index of 23, she is a lab@Location Partner for Carl Zeiss Microscopy, and remains deeply committed to the dissemination of knowledge through the teaching and mentoring of postgraduate students and core facility staff.

2019/09/18 - 2019/09/20 8th Workshop of the European Calcium Society (ECS): Calcium Signaling in Aging and Neurodegenerative Diseases. The scientific program was structured into five tracks dedicated the most recent advances in understanding calcium signaling in the brain underlying aging and neurodegenerative disorders. I was involved in the organization of special sessions dedicated to technological innovations in calcium imaging followed by a hands-on session on calcium imaging methodologies. (2017 - 2019)

2019/03/20 - 2019/03/22 Tissue Clearing Workshop. Tissue clearing is a technique that enables visualization of opaque organs and tissues in 3-dimensions (3-D) by turning tissue transparent. These 3 days intensive workshop covered various topics in tissue clearing by hands-on experience, from optimization and application of various clearing techniques, to light-sheet microscopy imaging to 3D visualization and quantification. This was the first course fully dedicated to Tissue Clearing organized in Portugal (2019/03/20 - 2019/03/22)

2019 - 2019 MICROdia. The MicroDay was a national initiative, on the framework of the PPBI, and where the microscopy research infrastructures from 13 nodes of PPBI open their door to under-graduated students. At CNC it was organized by MICC-CNC and involved several researchers that helped to demonstrate the importance of different light microscopy methodologies for answering their scientific questions. 2018 - 2018 INCOMAM2018 - 52º International Congress on Microscopy and Microanalysis. INCOMAM is the annual meeting of the Portuguese Society of Microscopy (SPM). The previous year the meeting was organized in Coimbra, by the President of the Society, and I was invited to be part of the Scientific Committee. The SPM currently encompasses the Life Science and Materials Science research fields and the main goal is to support the implementation and development of all types of microscopy and its scientific or technological applications (2018/10/12 - 2018/10/13)

2012 - 2012 Advanced Fluorescence Microscopy Workshop. A 'Zeiss on Your Campus' imaging workshop, sponsored by Carl Zeiss Microscopy. The workshop provided an unique opportunity not only to learn about fluorescence microscopy techniques, but also to provide answers to users of Axiovision and ZEN Imaging software. The workshop included a combination of lectures and hands-on labs, offering the opportunity to find out which imaging technique would give the best results for individual samples, and to compare the different optical sectioning techniques. 2019 - 2019 “O que são células?”. Escola Ciência Viva is a scientific education program that integrates the school curriculum in a scientific learning environment. Therefore, during my activity I introduced to 4th grade students the concept of cell and the different cell types, and students were allowed make and compared animal and vegetal cells preparations, and to visualize them under an optical microscopy.
