Dr Ioannis Sotiropoulos is a Reseracher C - Group leader at the Institute of Biosciences & Applications, NCSR Demokritos, Athens, Greece as well as an Affiliated Researcher at ICVS, Medical School, University of Minho. After the completion of his Bachelor degree in Biology (University of Patras, Greece), Ioannis performed his PhD studies in Neurosciences at the University of Heidelberg/Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, Germany. He has previously worked and received training in prestigious international institutions such as RIKEN Brain Science Institute (Tokyo, Japan), University College London (London, UK), Columbia University (NY, USA), MRC Center for Synaptic plasticity (Bristol, UK), Medical School of Athens (Greece). His research work focuses on understanding the orchestrating role of lifetime, daily stress on the onset of Alzheimer´s disease (AD) with specific focus on the relationship between AD and depression, a stress-related disorder. Dr Sotiropoulos utilizes molecular, electrophysiological, cellular, structural, proteomic, epigenetic, ultrastructural and behavioural approaches on the brain analysis related to the involvement of stress-driven molecules in neuronal (mal)function, pathological brain aging and peripheral biomarkers. Ioannis has successfully raised funds as scientific coordinator of national and international, state, private and industrial projects e.g. ELIDEK (Greece), FCT (Portugal), Servier (France), Jerome Leujeune Foundation (France), NIH (USA) and European programs. His teaching activities include participation in different master programs in Greece (UNiversity fo Athens, Crete Univeristy, Thessaloniki University) as well as o Postgraduation courses at Medical School, University of Minho while he teaches in an annual basis in courses of different Greek, Portuguese and European Universities (e.g. Athens Medical School, Greece, Coimbra Medical School, Portugal). He has so far supervised 23 PhD and Master students and plethora of ERASMUS, undergraduate students from Greece, France, Portugal and other EU countries. His work is published in high esteemed journals such as PNAS, Molecular Psychiatry, EMBO, Cell Death&Diif, Aging Cell, J Neuroscience. His scientific achievements are internationally recognized in the form of prizes/awards e.g. Hirnliga Alzheimer Award 2009, European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) Fellowship 2009 Award, Canon Foundation Award 2013, AD/PD Young Faculty 2014 Award, Jerome Lejeune 2017 Award, Janssen Innovation Award 2017. His supervising/mentoring skills are recently recognized by Alzheimer's Association as he got the Alzheimer’s Association Best Mentor Award in Neuroscience 2021. He is routinely invited to lectures at prestigious international meetings ([e.g. US Society for Neuroscience, AAIC, AD/PD conferences, EuroTau meeting., ECNP, FENS). He participates in the scientific council of different scientific organisations such as the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) and EuroTau consortium/conference. Ioannis is a regular reviewer for respectable journals (e.g. Mol Psychiatry, Brain, PNAS, Mol Neurodegeneration, Aging Cell, JBC) and grant evaluation panels (e.g. AAIC Alzheimer Association organisation, Alzheimer France and others).
