Maria Helena Braga is an Associate Professor and the Head of the Materials for Energy Research (MatER) laboratory at FEUP, University of Porto. She mentors 5 Ph.D. students, 4 masters, and one bachelor's, and collaborates with a researcher from the Polish Science Academy at MatER. Her laboratory was first set up in July 2020 and has been since equipped with state-of-the-art equipment acquired mostly after May 2019, when she was endowed with 500 k$ by the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Prof. John B. Goodenough, in recognition of her work. Since then, she has been funded with 4.5 M€(MatER's), including EU projects and 2 PRR (recovery resilience project). She brought to her collaborators in the US, Brazil, and EU >3.5 M€ since 2021. She was the Head of the Engineering Physics Department from March 2019 to March 2021. She is an integrated member and core CV 2024 of the Associated Laboratory LAETA-INEGI and participates in the Portuguese Batpower Scientific Committee. From 2016 to 2019, she was a Senior Research Fellow at the Materials Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. Throughout her career, Helena Braga was a Research Scholar and Long-Term Visiting Staff Member at Los Alamos National Laboratory (2008-2011). She has published over 280 outputs, from which 74 peer-reviewed publications (2 IF: 39.7; 1 IF: 19.9; 1 IF: 19.5-featured paper; 1 IF: 17.694; 2 IF: 16.383; 1 IF: 14.511), 16 patents, delivered more than 53 keynotes / plenary talks, and 10 invited seminars around the world (e.g. US, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, and Portugal), 3 book chapters, 4 collections of crystallographic insertions in Pearson and ICSD databases, and 127 conference presentations (mostly talks). She was a PI, local PI, and investigator in 61 projects that were developed/co-developed in the EU, USA, Japan, and Brazil, including 19 for beamtime and 3 for educational. According to Google Scholar, she has 1757 citations, h-index: 20. In 2020, Helena Braga received the Award Personalidade (Personality) Exame Informática - Visão - Sapo (Portuguese) with SIC (TV) for her work in energy storage and in 2021, the BIP PROOF, and in 2023 an IJUP-GALP project. She received FEUP's recognition award in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2008. Her collaborative solid-state battery cells with UT-Austin based on a ferroelectric Li- and Na-glass, whose IP is owned exclusively by Portugal, raised a lot of interest since news about our research populated the press (e.g., Scientific American, Forbes, KVUE (TV), NOVA (TV), IEEE Spectrum, Kronen Zeitung, The New York Times). Her work has received interest from more than 70 international companies. More than 25 visited UT-Austin (e.g. Google X, Daimler-Mercedes Benz, Hydro Québec, TDK, Panasonic, Bosch, Dyson, and Duracell). She was invited to visit/give talks at Google-X (USA), LG-Chem (South Korea), Duracell (USA), General Atomics (USA), Amorim Cork Composites, Bondalti, and EFACEC (Portugal). She was enrolled in more than 50 courses, workshops, and training courses to expand her knowledge in research and education topics and taught courses in Portugal (Univ. Fernando Pessoa, ISEP, and FEUP), Brazil (PUC-Rio), and at the USA (UT-Austin) and supervised/mentored Students/Post-docs at ISEP, FEUP, LANL (USA), and UT-Austin (USA). Up to 2019, Helena Braga taught an average of 8-9 h/classes of Physics per week (from Electromagnetism to Dynamics Systems Physics, covering all Physics subjects in Engineering) to >200 students/year, and at UT-Austin, she taught and was responsible for Materials Engineering in 2016/2017 in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (ME 344, 9 weeks, 6h/week, 26 students and 18 weeks, 3h/week, 38 students). She has contributed research in light alloys, lead-free solders, and hydrogen storage materials, and she is credited with creating ferroelectric-glass electrolytes and novel energy harvesting and storage devices. She identifies herself as a constant learner.
