My academic and professional journey bridges veterinary science and computer engineering, with a particular focus on the development of AI-powered diagnostic support tools. I studied at the Lycée Français Charles Lepierre (2004-2019) in Lisbon, where I became fluent in Portuguese, French, and English (C2), and gained working knowledge of German and Italian. These language skills continue to support my work in multilingual and international research environments. As an Energy Ambassador at COPVAL 2019—a student-led simulation of the UN Climate Conference (COP) hosted by the Lycée Français in Valencia—I helped promote sustainability initiatives among students and young professionals through peer engagement and thematic negotiations on biodiversity, energy, sustainable cities, and food security. I gained early exposure to veterinary practice by shadowing clinicians at the University of Liverpool (2017), AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário (2018), and Proleite Cooperativa Agrícola (2018). I also joined ambulatory veterinary rounds and participated in Veterinary Summer Schools at the Royal Veterinary College (2018) and the University of Bristol (2018). In 2020, I enrolled in veterinary medicine at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lisbon, but after one semester, I chose to pursue a more technical path to support clinicians through AI-driven tools. I then enrolled at Instituto Superior Técnico, where I earned both my Bachelor’s (2023) and Master’s (2024) degrees in Informatics and Computer Engineering, focusing on machine learning, programming, and system design. For my Master’s thesis, “Evaluating Asthma in Equines with Video Recordings,” I developed EquiBreathe, a deep learning tool that detects equine asthma from smartphone videos captured in real-world ambulatory contexts. I presented this work at EPIA 2024 and in that same year received distinctions at the redeSAÚDE Conference (top Master’s thesis at the University of Lisbon) and SPARK Student Award for innovation in sustainable, AI-driven diagnostics. This work was also showcased at the GTIE Conference and the 42nd Veterinary Comparative Respiratory Society Symposium. From March to May 2024, I joined Ayming, an R&D consulting and science writing firm, where I worked on grant proposals and funding strategies for industry partners. This role sharpened my technical writing and deepened my understanding of the research–innovation pipeline. In June 2024, I joined INESC-ID as part of the Accelerat.AI project, focused on natural language processing and speech technologies for the Portuguese language. I explored how large language models (LLMs) structure scientific information and developed use cases in medical diagnostics using both voice and text input. I contributed to backend model improvements and user interface development for clinical applications. Since the beginning of April, I have been working on EquiVet.AI, an FCT project developing AI-assisted tools for equine ambulatory care. I am currently working on multimodal AI applied to veterinary medicine, as part of my PhD preparation.
