Elena Gabirondo graduated in Chemistry in 2017 from the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) obtaining the Extraordinary End of Degree Award. She obtained her Master's degree in Chemistry and Polymers in 2018 from the same university. During her master's degree, she completed an internship at at BASF SE in Ludwigshafen am Rhein (Germany), where she carried out a project on the extraction and characterisation of cyclic polyesters. In 2018 Elena obtained a pre-doctoral fellowship (FPI-2018) and in 2022 she defended her PhD with Cum Laude and International mention in the Applied Chemistry and Polymeric Materials program under the supervision of professors Haritz Sardon and Agustin Etxeberria at UPV-EHU. From her main research topic: "New trends in the synthesis of polyesters: from catalyst design to chemical recycling" she published three scientific articles in Q1, having another one in process as the first author. In 2019 she spent two weeks at IATA-CSIC centre in Valencia (Spain) to carry out a project on the circular economy of PEF polymer in collaboration with Dr. Jose Maria Lagaron's group. In 2020 he joined Prof. Didier Bourissou's group at Paul Sabatier University of Toulouse (France) where she worked for four months as part of her PhD thesis where he carried out the synthesis of new monomers for the polymerisation of polyesters in room temperature, with a publication in progress. In 2022 she moved to IBM in San Jose, California, (USA) where she worked under the direction of organocatalysis expert Dr. James L. Hedrick, on the synthesis of carbonate monomers by the use of CO2. During her research career, Elena has taught Laboratory Courses in undergraduate subjects. She has also co-supervised a Bachelor's and Master's thesis and has supervised PhD students, fostering her communication and knowledge transfer skills. In total, Elena has published fifteen scientific articles in Q1, two patents and has participated in five national and international conferences. Over the last five years, she has developed skills in polymer synthesis and characterisation, organic chemistry, and chemical recycling. She has worked in five research groups and in five different countries, which highlights her adaptability and versatility in high-throughput work environments, strengthening her self-management and communication skills. In 2023 she obtained a postdoctoral grant from the Basque Government to carry out her research career for two years in Portugal, at NOVA School of Science and Technology (Lisbon) and University of Coimbra, and another two years in Spain, at POLYMAT - University of the Basque Country.
